Japanese Taiko drumming

Dana1312

Hi everybody,

it seems that we will be moving to GZ this summer and I am much looking forward to this new adventure.
I have read a lot of useful comments up to now here in this forum and I thank you for that.
What I would like to know: since almost 6 years I am playing and practising Taiko, the japanese drumming. Does anyone know whether I can find a Taiko group in GZ that I could join? I am kind of addicted to the taiko drumming (the real one, not the playing in front of a pc or TV:)) and I would be very disappointed if I needed to stop playing.
Greetings

So far 142 members have read this posting, but except from you no one did reply... Do I have to assume that there is no taiko group in GZ or that the people playing in a group don`t read this forum? As far as I am informed there are over 5000 japanese living in GZ. This is quite a lot and I am sure that there is a well functioning community there. Maybe I will solve the problem when we move to GZ and contact the chinese japanese association if there is one.
In any case I will contact you as soon as I found out anything. Thanks for replying :)

i am a little into GZ live music ,but  as far as i know no Jap drumming going on. Of course that kind of practice is different from other music instrument and i could also be that someone do that in special circles or gatherings. I'll try to know more about it.

Hi there,

thanks for replying. Yes, Taiko is usually not played like other percussion instruments are played. It is physically more demanding and some even say it`s like a very challenging workout. The group usually meets on a regular basis to practice and you need a location where you don`t disturb people with the really loud sound...
I will see whether I can find out more as soon as we get to Guangzhou, which will be in August.
In the meantime feel free to let me know in case anybody of you has some news about Taiko drumming.
Thanks, Dana

What is taiko drumming exactly?  What makes it unique?  I'm interested.

Sorry, I havent been on this site for a long time. Taiko means big drum and you hit the the drum with long sticks called bachi. It is better watched than explained and so I suggest you go on Youtube and type in "KODO",which is a group I really like and I think it is one of the worlds best taiko groups. Just watch some of their performances on youtube and I think you get a clear idea what Taiko is :) Have a nice day.

I searched that for you on the net but what comes out is some games in Game Centre. Or maybe you can check with the Japanese consulate in Guangzhou. They might have ideas.
