Weekends for me are time with family so we often head to the Joma coffee shop around mid to late morning for a breakfast. They have three locations in Vientiane. Then head into the City to beat the heat by wandering around the air conditioned mall. After that we sometimes head 20 klm out of town to the Lao Derm Somnguen floating restarant on the Ngam Ngum river. There you can hire a motorised boat complete with toilet. You then order the food and drinks then off upstream you go eating and drinking. When far enough up the river the driver then turns around and you drift leisurely downstream back to the restaurant. For those of you who are only in Vientiane for a limited time you could start your day with a great Lao coffee and a pastry or have a bowl of noodles. The Buddhist park is worth the 45 minute drive out of town or a wander around the talat sao(morning market) There are Stupas to visit with That Luang being the biggest. Check out Patuxay monument and climb to the top for a lovely view.
To round the day off a stroll around the night market along the banks of the Mekong is worth a go. Plenty to do and see but at a leisurely pace
