Belgium increases nationality fee starting July 2025
Belgium has officially decided to raise the fee for applying for Belgian nationality — from €150 to €1,000. The change is supposed to start from July 1, 2025, but only if the Senate approves it before their summer holidays. If not, it will still happen later in the year, in autumn.
The fee will go up every year with inflation, and it will be rounded — so instead of something like €1,011.25, it will become €1,100 in 2026.
This is a huge jump and will make it much harder for many people especially families or low-income applicants to afford Belgian citizenship.

That is damn expensive...😳😳

Not really, it will be like the rest of the EU.
@maharaji1984
This time it isn't rumor. It is decided.
@Mia0210
I am waiting for my PR decision. If decision is made before 1st July i am lucky , else 850€ will fly from my pocket due to quick bureaucracy system.
I wonder what happens to integration requirements as they also talked about it. Further, what happens to the people who plan to apply for citizenship and have already obtained Integration certificate (social integration and passed A2 level)
@ARMaliq
Nothing will happen. Even if they pass a new law that requires B1 level, it will only apply to new people — those who come to Belgium after the law comes into force. So you can relax, because in Belgium laws do not work backwards.
And honestly, all that talk about B1 feels like just populist noise. I think it will stay just a rumor. It would be way too expensive for the government to implement. The government actually needs to save money, not spend more.
In the case of increasing the citizenship fee — that makes financial sense. But raising language requirements? On the contrary

I think you misunderstood. In fact, the law does not work reversely. However, new application lodged after the new law must follow that. In that case, B1 must be matched (if such law would have been approved). This is not for new or old comers because this is based on citizenship application.
If I pay the 150 EUR before July, will I be exempt from the new law?
Is this payment the equivalent of opening a new file in the system?
What if i am eligible to apply for citizenship but i couldn't find an appointment date before July?
@maharaji1984
Then I guess you can pay June 30, but you need a proof that there is no available slots so that you can explain that your intent was to apply before 1st of July.
Are you sure there are not slots? It's May now.
@maharaji1984
Sounds like a joke to be honest. Can't be so long. Or can?
I guess I am too spoiled, in my commune nearest option is today 15:10... Now it's 13:30
Do you know -Â If I pay the 150 EUR before July, will I be exempt from the new law?

@ailukebreish
Unfortunately, I don't know. In theory, it could work. But in practice don't know. They might accept the application under the old fee. Or they might ask you to pay the difference. Or even refund the €150 and require you to reapply with the €1,000. At this point, there are no official clarifications, and it's unlikely we'll ever get any. We'll probably only find out how it works in practice.
@Mia0210
Welcome to my world.
Imagine, as today commune is processing L type of cards applications from 24 January (4 month backlog) so citizenship is normal.
@maharaji1984
I don't know what commune you live in, but I just randomly checked 2 random Brussels communes (Etterbeek and Saint-Giles), Bruges, Oostende and Hasselt - all of them had an appointments available not later than mid June.
So I recommend you check again, perhaps you misunderstood.
Or, in the worst case, send email saying that you need appointment before July since you have a valid reason - 850 euros is a lot of money.Â
@Mia0210
It's antwerpen and yes there is no misunderstanding unfortunately.
I drop the link to confirm :
@maharaji1984
Wow, that's crazy! I am shocked. You definitely need to send them an email, this is not normal in ieder geval
@Mia0210
Hahaha this kind of things zijn normaal gezien in Antwerpen.
I am still waiting an answer from IBZ where i applied for L kart in 01.01.2025
As soon as they approve my application i will GO to the commune as they dont give a cent to the calls or mails.
850€ is my 1,5 weeks salary
I have calculated the assumed application numbers when we consider the next available application day in Antwerpen.
Its approximately 5.000 applications process pending till 06.11.2025 (5 months) in this moment if only 1 person is in charge and works 6,5 hours per work day.
If you assume 2 or more person in charge multiple the number with 5.000 .
Note : In February 2025 roughly 5.000 nationality given in all over the Belgium. source :

If more people are working why would you multiply it? It should be divided by half.
Is this law already voted, I think they have an agreement, but not yet a vote in the senate?
Will this start in July?
I'm in a difficult situation since I will be able to apply when I finish my studies and get my degree which will be in September.
A few months difference will make a huge difference financially for me.
@ievgenfeldmann
The increase is virtually certain to happen but it still needs the Senate to approve it.
And, yes, Senate will approve it anyway but not yet, as of today June 19, 2025.
After the approval of Senate, the next step is royal assent, and official publication.
@°µÍø½ûÇøSprinter
The Belgian Senate has not yet approved the increase of the nationality application fee to €1,000 starting from 1st July 2025.
BUT it is just matter of time before the increase to €1,000 is implemented. 1st of July or later. If Senate doesn't approves it before summer recess, i.e. 9th July, they will review it after 8th Sep when the summer recess is over. then it will probably take effect later, maybe 1st Oct 2025.
@°µÍø½ûÇøSprinter
You can pay now and hope that it won't be changed. It will be approved even if you apply later than 1st of July.
More details:
Temporary postponement for increase in nationality registration fee
The draft Programme Act could not be voted on in the Chamber last week . This also means that the increase in the federal registration fee on procedures to obtain Belgian nationality from 150 to 1,000 euros, which was scheduled to enter into force on 1 July 2025, will not enter into force for the time being. Civil Affairs Flanders will monitor the further steps in the legislative process and will keep you informed.
