Shared TV Dish

The Groove

If one shared a TV dish with a neighbour would the selection of TV channels that I want to watch be dictated to by his preferences of channels?

no as long as you have a dual lnb - ie two outputs the channel selection is individual

if there are more than one lnb then a diseqc switch is required....allowing switching between satellites and lnbs

The Groove

I think there is a single LNB on the neighbours dish.If we shared I would buy  the Dual LNB and the diseqc switch and possibly pay some sort of rental charge to the dish owner for usage?
Would I then have to use the same provider as he is using.

Toon

it largely depends where his dish is pointing - what s he watching do you know....

you will defo need a dual lnb assuming the dish is pointing at the same satellite you want... that being the case then thats all you will need except cabling and connectors-no need for diseqc switch if only one satellite...if more than one satellite is required you will need other lnbs..and a diseqc - 2way or 4way way depending on how many lnbs you use and sats you envisage accessing . this also assumes its a fixed dish and not a motorised one....if its motorised then it wont really work for you.

when you say provider - what do you mean
remember this is a public forum and anything that may be considered illegal shoudlnt be mentioned - if this is the case then PM here

Hi Toon,
Thanks for the info.We have not met the neighbour who lives on the 1st floor. We viewed the 2nd floor apartment last week and there is a communal roof area where his dish has been placed.Any further questions I will keep on a pm level or meet up someone in the know when we arrive.
Thank you,
Max

Hi all can you tell me the best  tv package to go for in Gozo  thanks

tearnet

There are only two (legal?) options for packages, GO or Melita.
We tried both but Melita have the best broadband so we use them. As for TV they are both as bad as the other, out of date UK TV or Italian plus sport.

OOP,s forgot there are a couple of small comanies the will stream UK tv ,not Sky ,to your TV.
Toonarmy is the guy to contact for more technical info :)

couldnt agree more...plus very little if any live UK tv....granada and bbc entertainemnt both out of date programming. and to get both you have to have the largest and most expensive package.....
and progs are repeated regularly.....even worse than uk sky. plus you need both packages to get a decent coverage of football if you are a footy fan.

what you really need is a quattro lnb and a multiswitch. LNB operate on 4  "channels", horizontal, vetical, hi and lo, a normal lnb can only be in one channel, if you were to split the signal from a standard universal lnb, you could watch different channels from the same bird ( satellite) if they happened to be in the same "channel",  so at worst you'd be ok 25% of the time. However in reality the transponder tend to bunch similar tv channels to similar sat frequencies so you'd probably be good 50% of the time, if you or your neighbour changed channel you might risk interrupted their signal.

Dual LNB's are fine, they just double up BUT if you wanted to have a proper share with as many people you like then quattro and multiswitch is the correct choice. They work by supplying all four channels to the multiswitch and it in turn distributes. ( its what the hotels use )

These are insanely simple to install as long as you have a sat finder or a good dollop of time to get the direction spot on.

and

probably the worst website still in existence but the guys there are encyclopaedic

anyone now exactly when Aunty is going to narrow the footprint and kill malta sat reception?

Toon

2nd quarter of 2013.....we will lose the itv channels and summer for bbc channels

brayster99

Thanks.  No point bringing my 3m dish then..

Toon

2.4m dishes in Spain are failing at themoment so its highly questionable if a 3m dish would manage to recieve it. it will be a much tighter spot beam targetting UK only.....anybody getting it outside of Uk is liucky and its likely ot be a spurious lobe of signal and not too stable.

Hi Toon

Will there be a 'solution' to this problem in the future?

Mike

Toon

other then IPTV (and even that is being subjected to ip geo blocking) so I sort of doubt it - we shall have to wait and see what is viewable after the changes the interesting bit will be what sly uk do about their current pan european beamed signals. will they stay or will the go too??????

MikeInPoulton

Cheers for that

.........let's hope it's 'sorted' by the time we make the move across. Can't really imagine not having access to my live footy/sport....and I don't know how many times I'll get away with - "just off to the local to watch the footy/rugby/cricket etc".

Toon

go and melita currently have and show all the footy but its a premium package and to get it you have to have both packs and i think you have to have the other bilge as well.

Toon

theres lots of these but heres a new one
