Arrived and settling in...

JackC

Greetings,

My name is Jack, my wife is Jill (cute, eh?) and we have just arrived to take up residency. We are here with our 14 year old daughter, Tori and our 19 y/o daughter Zhenya will be here off and on as well. We are presently in Gozo and hope to settle here. We are from the USA (Texas, Missouri, Louisiana) though most of our current friends/connections are UK. We are applying for residency so any tips on that from non-EU folks who got residency would be appreciated - we found out quick that it's not so easy for non-EU.

Our interests are sailing, snorkeling, diving, hiking, music and friendships. We would like to begin lessons to learn Maltese and our daughter Tori has a keen interest in horses.

Along with some friends living aboard a ship currently in the Mgarr marina, we have been invited to participate in Bethlehem Ghajnsielem over the next few weeks.

I've been following this blog for several months and got quite a good bit of very useful info from here and we appreciate all who contribute.

One question I have is - are there any Maltese customs or social traditions that we should be aware of? We lived in Russia for a few years and we learned theirs by violating them. :P

So, there you have it, please pass on any introductions or insight you may wish to and we look forward to meeting many of you in coming months and years.

Ah Maltese customs.... now let me think????

NEVER open a door for a woman,

Never park in a designated parking space when there is an illegal one close by,

Never whisper in public.. always talk louder than anyone else,

Always keep a barking dog in your flat, house, roof, garage, boat, car, if you don't own any of these let it roam the street!

There are loads more but I feel a large wine coming on!!

welcome to Malta,
     Terry

Not sure what we'll be doing yet. We just know that we'll be costumed and put where they need us. We're delighted to be able to get involved.

Great stuff but you missed: "While driving, wait to pass until you're on a blind curve or hill and always double the posted speed limit".

Not this time, I'm afraid. We were in Nadur and Xewkija most the day.

We'd be happy to meet up with others - especially those on Gozo - most any time, just propose a time/place and I'll check with the social director. ;)
