New UK Passport

jporteruk2023

Hi Guys

I'm probably going to sound a bit disorganised and stupid but here goes, hope someone can advise -

I got residency in spain (a TIE card) in March '21. Now I just realised my UK passport expires this April. On going online to apply for my new british passport I realised they ask me where I'm resident, and also to send my old passport for the application. So I am wondering now if I was supposed to do something when I got residency in Spain i.e. tell some government office in the UK (not sure who) that I had residency in Spain... Now I'm not sure what happens when I go to apply for my new passport and hand in my old one and I guess they will say I've been living in Spain. Is this a problem? I just assumed with the scanning of passports these days they would know these things. But now I'm wondering if I could be in a lot of trouble for not making my situation clear.

It would be great to know of anyone whos been in a similar situation and can advise, or someone who knows about the situation regarding this.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help, it's all quite worrying!

James

Hi James

Your enquiry is not stupid at all. I am resident in Spain and have my TIE. I had to apply to renew my British passport last year. Very straightforward. Go to the UK Gov website and follow their instructions including digitally signed photograph (I used an approved photographer and it cost about 10€). I sent my old passport back to the UK registered mail to ensure it did not get mislaid. New passport couriered within about three weeks, followed by old passport couriered back separately a week later.

One cautionary note: when accessing UK Gov website, you may see other sites that look legitimate, but they may charge a fee for their service. I only ever us the UK Gov site.

Good luck.

You're quite right to be concerned. The British Secret Police (the dreaded BRASI) keep tabs on all Dissidents, "Droogs", and "Disloyals" who have acquired residence in non-British territories. Then, on any trip back to the UK (e.g. to collect a new passport, visit yer mum), alarms are triggered... and you are swept up into a secret re-education camp just outside Heathrow. The rumours are that they tape your eyeballs open and use the brutal "Ludovico Technique" by showing you videos of Meditteranean beaches, sangria, and paella while giving you electric shocks. They don't let you out until you can say "I love Milton Keynes and fish and chips" with sincerity. If I were you, I'd tear up my TIE and hurry to relocate back to Grimsby as fast as I could.

But other than that, welcome to the °µÍø½ûÇø.com forum and enjoy your new life in Spain. It's just like Grimsby, but with extra paella.

But seriously... the UK is very relaxed about its citizens becoming resident elsewhere, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. @Bee Eater has some great info, you can renew easily, online, while in Spain. The website is here:
