Car Hire

Spangle

Hi

I'm going to take the plunge and hire a car on my own for a week. Pick up Valencia Airport on 20th January 2017. I've been quoted 185 euros for a Ford Fiesta or similar, including full insurance and policy.

Seems like a lot to me, but as I've never hired a car before, I don't really know! In the past, i've had  a local person drive me around. I've probably paid him about the same - to pick me up from airport and take back etc. I have a house near villar del Arzobispo.

The company is Goldcar.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Alicia

Hi Spangle,

The car hire quote is correct for a week. If you need a driver, then you could move without hiring a car, but it be more costly.

I am from Barcelona, and could guide you in my city and región, but not in Valencia.

Alice,

If you are able to visit Barcelona during your stay in Valencia, let me know,

I will!

Let us know how it went with the car hire!, I just had a poor experience with Record Go in Alicante. I booked and paid in full in advance, almost 200 euros, then on arrival it turned out I had to pay them another 200 on the spot because I had chosen a "basic insurance". Make sure you have the car inspected and signed off when you drop it off, some customers have had charges to their credit cards long after the car was returned, with the claim that there were damages to the vehicle, and there was no paper work to show the car was fine when returned. I'd even take photos.

Best of luck!

Not a bad idea to take photos of all sides of the car before you drive off so that you can prove any existing damage.  I have usually got a staff member to stand in the shot too.

Hi

Yes I will let you know how I get on. I haven't paid anything yet,and it's supposed to cover full insurance. They were recommended by friends who were happy with them... I thought about taking photos, it's a good idea.

Did you give them a bad review?

I have never hired a car in Spain however I have in UK.

On one occasion I was in the queue to return the car and the person in front of me was being charged £300 for a broken windscreen. It had happened just as he was arriving at the return office when a brick was thrown up by a truck.

He was questioning why he had to make the payment when he had taken out full cover including collision damage waiver.  He was told the insurance did not cover glass, tyres nor underbody damage.

Probably a good idea when hiring, and believing you are covered, to ask about possible exceptions.

Just thought I would take a look on Google re the bits not covered by insurance.

It would seem I was right.  See:

This is an extract:

Exceptions

The following instances/scenarios are not covered by either the ERI or Zero Excess policies:

Severe negligence – Driving without due care and attention, drink driving, driving off-road etc.

Negligence – Mis-fuelling, loss or damage to car keys etc.

Other – Tyre and wheel damage, interior damage, damage to the roof, damage to the underside of the vehicle, damage to the glass parts of vehicle (including the windscreen), wing mirrors, locks and aerial.

Hi Spangle.

I think 185 euros for a week is too expensive. I have found in a  Ford Fiesta for 33 euros and an Audi A1 for 34 euros for 7 days. Total insurance costs 11.5 euros per day. An additional driver costs 8 euros per day.

Hi Pedro

I think it's too expensive as well.

I'll check out the link, thank you.
