Insurance in Mexico

jazzpaz

My insurance questions are about homes and cars:

Is there anything similar to renter's insurance in Mexico? How does it work? Where is it purchased?

Also, I will be bringing my car. How do you purchase auto  insurance on Mexico? What does it cover? Please tell me what l need to know. And, how to change my Texas plates to Mexican.

Thank you all much! Can't wait to get to Mexico!

One Auto Insurance Provider:

Baja Bound (policies from Chubb)

Short-term: $10–$30/day

6-months: $200–$400 for basic, but I paid $909 for 6 months of full coverage with legal help on a 2023 Tacoma SR5 4WD. I chose a policy good for anywhere in Mexico, not just the Baja Peninsula for the duration of my tourist visa.

Longer-term policies cost less per day than short-term ones.

Legal Coverage: Covers help if you’re in an accident with injury/death. Often included, or adds ~$10–$20.

Thank you so much! Where did you buy it?

I'm hoping to visit Mexico soon, I will rent a car there. Is insurance required to rent a car?

Do you buy it from the car rental place or somewhere else?

I've never rented a vehicle in Mexico so, I have no information for that.

I purchased the insurance online through Baja Bound Mexican Insurance. This should not be confused with "MexiPass". I don't know anything about that company. Baja Bound Mexican Insurance seems to serve mostly customers that travel to the Baja Peninsula but you can purchase policy coverage that's good anywhere in Mexico.

If you visit México, if you arrive at airport, you will find a lot of rental car companies.

You don't need to worry about insurance, the car has the insurance already.

I will be moving from San Antonio to Mexico at the end of this year. I think some folks here confused "renters insurance" with renting a car. My understanding is there is normally such thing as rental insurance in Mexico, but I could be wrong. You should contact the company that handled your auto insurance. I asked the company through whom I purchased my auto and homeowners insurance but they will not cover me for renters insurance in Mexico (I'm not too worried about it as I am not moving many possessions there). I recommend that you speak to a facilitator or lawyer, there are many that help folks move to Mexico. I can give you the name of my facilitator if you like, she is in Puerto Vallarta and might be able to at least point you in the right direction.

As for bringing your car: importing a car can be quite costly. You will have to pay an import tax. Are you applying to temporary or permanent residency? If you applying for temporary, you can keep your US plated car in Mexico for up to 4 years without converting to Mexican plates. the only thing is you will have to keep up with your US registration, and you will have to carry both US auto insurance AND Mexican auto insurance. This is what I am planning to do; I am going to drive into Mexico and keep my car with me for a few years, and before the 4 years is up, I'll return it to the states and either sell it or give it to my kids.

There is a Facebook group called "Driving in Mexico" where people ask these questions quite regularly. There are some companies that walk you through the import and transfer process if thats what you really want to do. But the advice I've heard most often is to leave your US car in the US and buy a car in Mexico, it's easier and cheaper. After my 4 years of temporary residency are up and I'm getting ready to switch to permanent, thus is what I'll do.

Good luck!
