Is it possible for me to teach Chinese in Brazil ?

momochong1

Hi, everybody, I'm a native Chinese and I'm 36 years old now. I used to work as a Middle School teacher in China for around 5 years. I'd like to work and live in Brazil if possible. I'm now a small businessman, engaging in import and export business in China, my question is: Is it possible for me to find a job as a Chinese teacher or work as a businessman? I can speak Chinese, English and a bit Spanish. Thank you a lot for any help or answer. I have rich experience in sourcing, quality control, auditing and other business services etc in China as well: bizinchina.cc泭 I've been tired of living and working at my end now and I'm planning to move to a new country but I do not know how to proceed ...

Hi momochong1,

Yes, it would be quite easy to find a job teaching Chinese (especially Mandarin) here in Brazil, mostly in the large cities such as S瓊o Paulo, Rio, Bras穩lia where business is conducted on a global scale. Brazil is waking up to the new global reality that China is an ever growing world economy and strong trading partner.

Unfortunately, teaching (anything)does not pay well if you work for a school. The real money is to be made teaching private classes and it takes a lot of time to build up a student base that is sufficient to generate a good income. I know because I've been teaching for 24 years (over 10 of them here in Brazil).

Start off by finding a position in a couple of schools and let them fill your schedule with classes. As you slowly build your roster of private students slowly cut-back on the classes you give at the schools. That works well.

I guess that you could try a Google search for Berlitz, they teach various languages .

Hi Momochong1,

No dinner is necessary, I'm only too glad to have been able to give you some helpful information.

As for you settling in S瓊o Paulo, I wish you all the luck in the world and would love to meet you personally should you arrive in this country.

Hey momochong

I hope you made it!泭
Same question. I'm recently studying abroad in London and willing to experience the life in Brazil. Is it easy for Chinese to get a teaching job or a job in gallery?

Bardamu

You could find a job but it does nit give rights for a working visa. First issue.
Then as explained James, it does not pay well and it is not enough money for an 做厙輦⑹ to live in a big city. Take what you could earn in London, let's say 2k per month; divide by 8, ie 300 sterlings/R$1200 per month is quite good for a beginning. Now think that big brazilian cities are not much cheaper than London (especially as an 做厙輦⑹). FYI a lot of university teachers with doctorate earn R$2000/month. Teaching is very much devalorised in Brazil. People with a lot of local experience and recognition/network can certainly earn more but it is tough. Teachers who did well are those who setup their activity as proper businesses, create their school, buy a language franchise (there a huge number in Brasil), website, etc...

James

Well to be quite honest, despite the fact that China is fast becoming one of the leading world economies, the language is not really what you would consider a "commercial" (i.e. profitable) language here in Brazil. Surprisingly even English isn't that widely spoken here, not even in the workplace. Portuguese is really the operational language here commercially and if there is a second place it's probably Spanish because all the other South and Central American countries are Spanish-speaking.

Also there is a very significant population of Sino-brasileiros here in Brazil, many of whom don't even speak Chinese. I think that you'd be hard pressed to find work teaching Chinese anywhere in Brazil and you'd end up making near-slave wages even if you did.
