Fred

I noticed a thread about a bloke in Java who'd written a book but I can't find it now.
The idea seemed quite interesting and I'd rather like to ask a couple of questions to the poster but I have no idea who it was.

If he/she should happen to read this, please post a link to the site so I can have a peek at it.
I'm fancying a little go myself but, as I have no clue about that sort of stuff, I really need a few pointers.

Thanks.

PS - No need to restrict it to that one person, any advice would be nice.

Got you; I recall the avatar now I've seen it.
Please post a link to the book site so I can have a peek. Either here or by PM will do the honours.

Also. I'm toying with the idea of having a bash at a picture book; any ideas on how to get such a thing published?

Fred

Hang on, no need.
I ggogled the title and found it

Now, about that advice to get me published. Any ideas would be helpful.

PS - I just read your bio. sounds a lot like we grew up in the same place but mine was called Barnsley but we say, Ey up, rather than wy ey.

Do they say that in Jarrow?
Anyway, both industrial towns with no industry and not a lot else.

I've seen your pics and they are good but it is the comments with them that would make it sell...
i have had a bit of a 'domestic' with a couple of publishers before settling on self publishing but using a commercail distributor...

I'll respond in detail when I am on the desktop tomorrow...I am on the Nokia and can't see squat...besides my 9yo is watching Mysterious Island so I am doing the Dad equivalent of Google...like 'where does rain come from?... 'how many volts does an electric eel produce? ...how fast can a submarine go?

Fred

Cheers.
I await your answer.

Hi All,

Please note that some posts were removed from this thread because they were off-topic.

Ok Fred do you have in mind how you want your book to look and sound, the content, the format?

If yes,try and find similar works online and follow back to the publisher's websites, once there, read their guidelines and format requirements.

You will find very annoyingly that twenty different publishers have twenty different ways they want things presented.

Some will deliberately make things seem awkward and 'picky' this is to weed out the timewasters, and believe me having been on the receiving end of some efforts to review... there are only so many ways you can imply 'puerile' without repeating yourself.

Once you have seen the general requirement though you can start to put together your book.

I have never went the photography based route so I don't know what they will be looking for, but in my genre they usually ask for:
Submission letter.
Title, genre, synopsis, list of chapters, brief on the chapters one line, number of words/pages.
Author, bio,literary history.

That will do for starters.

Thank you for cleaning up...windows next?

Fred

I would like the thing to be very much like the thread but less random and add a few stories.
This all started out on another forum but was just going to be one story about my terrible Indonesian and how I cocked up.
It went on from there.
So far, just short of 6 years into that thread, and people are still reading it.

Joe Writeson

OK I've got you...start to put it together.

Times New Roman font size 12,that is he norm for publishers for review, my book went out in Garamond 11 because it fit better.

I've seen your pics and your stories and I suggest you create chapters around the themes on your 'Walkabouts'

Eating Places and food.
Transport.
People at work.
Scenery.
Kids.
Characters.
The unusual.
Buildings.
Beautiful Ladies.
etc

Then add say about a thousand words to each chapter.

Don't take away the impact of your pics by printing more than two on one page and stick to only one if possible with one of your 'descriptions' in the form of a short paragraph.

Fred

Thanks for that.
I don't work much and I don't do scenery but the rest I have thought of ideas for.
I, as a sound married chap. hadn't considered doing anything about beautiful ladies but, if I must.

Fred

Cheers.
I'm taking this on board.
Unique is easy out here.

Once you have your basis together Fred we can move on into actually contacting publishers.

Two sprang immediately to mind, both Singapore based, one very much in the 'Coffee Table' mode high quality but not high brow arty farty, the second one knows the Asian literary market inside out, including the vastly ignored Indian subcontinent.

Update me as you go along.
