what you mean?

I posted this on the other board and didn't get a reply...maybe I was too brief here. Anyway.... I live in America currently where a car (in most small towns) is a necessity. I'll be away for a year. I'm wondering what most people do (people who have cars and leave them behind)? Do you sell your car? Store it? Or what?? I'm not sure what to do. I'm still making payments.... any suggestions

Funny we have a condo currently in Maryville that is for sale as we only are back in the states for a week or so each month.  We had the same probelm with a car, and we decided to keep it as we could not get out of it what it was worth.  So we maintain minimum insurance on it and it is in the garage on a trickle charger for the battery.  When the condo sells we will move the car to Florida and register it there at my sisters address.

Hi Bob ~ thanks for your reply. I was thinking about asking my sister or a friend to watch my car for me. I'm not sure yet what to do...

I have been switching living/working between USA and Europe a lot during the last 20 years. I left my US car first in my own garage in my house (occupied by my then studying daugher) and then, when she graduated and I sold the house I kept leaving a car (there have been more than one over the years) in HER garage, be it in Denver or in Georgia. I also kept one car in Europe for a while, in Spain, at friend's garage, but then I switched from working in Europe to working in the Caribbean/Central America and there I either need to rent a car (if going to a short assignment) or buy one (if going on a longer one) and then sell it - like I did in Puerto Rico last year.

Minerva ~ how interesting....

I'm wondering if I could leave it in longterm parking at the airport? ? ----- probably a bad idea.... I'll need new tags in October. Oh, this is so hard!!!

Angela, long term parking would be too expensive. I would suggest advertise in local classifieds for a place to park your car. Someone might have an extra parking space and like to make a few bucks. You can get your tags when you get back (if you can't renew on line). Just tell them (might show a proof) that you've been overseas and the car wasn't driven.
Good luck!

P.S. I'd let you park at my place for free = but it is a fairly long drive (7 hours?) from Knoxville to Brunswick, GA (however, if you decided, you could fly out of Jacksonville, Fl which is only an hour away.
