Can someone explain how Egytian phones numbers work?

Stumble_On

Hi all -

This may sound ridiculous, but can someone explain how Egyptian phone numbers work? The number of digits in a number seems completely arbitrary and then sometimes I have to add +20, then sometimes people tell me to drop the '0' in front of a number, and someone told me to randomly add a '3' so that I have the correct number of digits.

A coworker told me yesterday, "In Egypt anything is possible, but nothing is easy"...I think I take her point.

hello stumble_on;

to start with take your coworker point " it will help you during your stay here in all aspects ":idontagree:

as for phone numbers " for land lines & check first that u have access to 0 service", till last year all phones in cairo & giza " and maybe other cities as well not sure" was 7 numbers after they change that to 8 numbers so some areas they add 2 befor the old number other areas they add 3 so if you"r dailing a number - land line - & you find"t 7 numbers only u will have to check what to add next to it and u daial 8 numbers strait without adding 0 or anything if u"r dailing"t from mobile u have to add citiy code before, and if u"r dailing mobile you daile"t strait as it is whether from land line or mobile;

i wish that this was some help :whistle:
welcome to egypt:dumbom:

Boby moon

just remember that each city got a different code unless you are dialing a short number like 19XXX or delivery numbers like 16xxx

but when you call from a local phone then it would be as follows:
Cairo: 02-XXXXXXXX(city code-local number)
Alex:  03-XXXXXXX (city code-local number)

this link would help you if you are calling from Great Cairo any city other than Great Cairo.

will there are so simple

country code is +2 not +20
mobiles starts with 010 or 012 or 011 etc..

so if your mobile number is 0111234567
it becomes +2 011 1234567

Cairo land lines starts with 02 alex. starts with 03
so if you number is 21234567 and you live in Cairo
your number is +2 02 2123457
if you live in Alex.  +2 03 21234567
got it? :)

i hope this could help
and welcome to Cairo
