Help negotiating salary and benefits

RossH

Hello everyone.

I came up with an idea for a way to grow a valuable crop in Ethiopia, and I would like to start a business doing this. I have a BS in plant science/agriculture, but no experience growing this particular crop. I have thoroughly researched how to do it, though, and I came up with a novel method without which the crop would not be able to grow in Ethiopia. I explained the basic idea to investors already, but I am withholding many of the details until I negotiate my salary, benefits, and place in the company. Because this crop is slow to multiply its planting material, the business will be off to a slow start, but once there is enough planting material, it should be very profitable.

I am trying to get a sense of how much I could reasonably expect to get for salary and benefits.

About me: I am originally from the US, but I served in the Peace Corps in Zambia for over two years.

Thank you for the help.

I think you are better off going it alone. Find a way to find the land (from the gov or whatever) and develop your own business.

Never divulge your trade secrets to anyone. If you do, then don't! If you really really do, then they will find a way to kick you out of the deal and you will be left holding the bag. I have heard stories. Yes, right here!

If capital fund is an issue, try to do it on a much smaller scale and gradually grow your business. Whatever you do, don't give away your intellectual property.

My two-cent.

Thank you Zpey. I am sure I will need some type of funding, but I'll look into other sources. Maybe investors not from Ethiopia wouldn't feel as comfortable replacing me with someone they don't know, or maybe I can get a grant. I'll be wary of divulging more secrets.

Cheers,
Ross
