Kenya Trip

hkdman

Hi!  Ok - my Kenya itinerary is starting to take shape!

Here is the itinerary I have so far:

Arrive Sept 5

Staying at Manzoni 680 -please let me know if you have any opinions - good or bad - regarding this hotel -

From September 7 - 10 -Talek Bush Camp for Safari.  Again - please let me know if you have a good or bad opinion of this camp.

I am not sure what to do from September 10-16.  I could go to Monbasa for 3 days or so and then spend 3 days in Nairobi.  Or stay longer in Monbasa and less in Nairobi - or just stay in Nairobi.  Does anyone have any opinions?  Is it worth going to Monbasa?  This ismy first trip to Nairobi.  Is the beach in Monbasa really decent, lots to do? worth visiting, etc.?

Thanks for your opinions!

Maanzoni 680 and Talek are good choices.  The rest of your trip depends on you - do you like the idea of getting into the culture, or enjoying the touristy options?

The beach in Mombasa is fine, however, you will be followed by 'hawkers' who walk and sell whatever they can. We always enjoyed staying at Severin Sea Lodge, but there are hundreds of options.  If you want more local culture, Kahama Hotel is great.  Be careful about going out at night.

Additionally, Voi should not be overlooked for some truly local food and SaltLick is a great place to stay and safari for a day.  You can take the train from Nairobi to Voi ($30? for 1st class).

You really should be sure to visit one of the Maasai markets in Nairobi - central Nairobi, or they travel throughout the week to various shopping centers - definitely an experience not to miss.  Be aware - prices are whatever they think is in your pocket, so be serious about negotiating.  If you have offered a price and they are saying 'no' but wiping the item off of dust, they have already agreed to your price in their head.

you must go to Diani Beach. Rated the best beach in Africa.

Also the less time in Nairobi the better. Go see the Rift Valley, climb Longonot, hike at Ngong hills or Amboseli National Reserve
