Marycheese

Jambo,

I am moving to Kenya in april to live with my Kenyan fiancee. Going for couple of weeks now in december too.

Does anyone have tips for looking for work there. I worked in Tourism for the last 8years. Any help is much appreciated.

Asante sana

Hi Marycheese and welcome to °µÍø½ûÇø!

You should maybe try to post an advert in Nairobi classifieds > jobs section.

Hope it helps,

Hi,  There are quite a few threads on this site on the subject of finding work.  Its not easy and after many years of marriage to a Kenyan, I have not managed to find work, or successsfully apply for a work permit.  We ended up starting our own business (not a complicatated process) and also bought property, which we rent.  We have also managed by me spending several months working in the UK.  This has also resolved any visa issues - I am not in Kenya for more than 6 months at a time.

Things are gradually unfolding themselves to the point where we can sustain ourselves well in Kenya and I can now work on getting the residency side of things sorted out.

There is high unemployment in Kenya, with many of those out of work being well educated and it is government policy to look for suitably skilled Kenyans to fill vacancies, before recruiting foreigners.  Regarding a work permit, it is your employer who applies for this, on your behalf, giving reasons why they need to hire you.  It appears (to me) to be more difficult to get a job once you are in Kenya, than applying from outside.

All the very best of luck.
