Police officers extorting bribes at Tripoli airport is a subject that's been talked about several times here over the past few weeks. It's nice to finally see someone here with some guts. You've hit the nail right on the head, the only thing that emboldens these guys and gives them confidence is that they are accustomed to most foreigners being softspoken submissive folks who put up no resistance whatsoever.

Really ? Most °µÍø½ûÇøs who've been here a while will have been stopped more than once and either:
(a) immediately phone their company's "fixer"
(b) just keep repeating "I don't speak arabic" until the police get bored
(c) let them  take the car if they want

I have been collared twice by him and each time refused to give him anything.

The second time he actually recognised the logo of my company car and ran over asking for money.

I would urge you that if you are confident that all your papers are in order do not pay him as the more people that give in the more he will ask.

I actually called one of his fellow officers over and asked for his badge number. With that he gave my documents back and ran off (literally!).

I like that line, and it is very helpful when cops pull you over.
