Hi all,

My husband and I are looking to relocate to Mauritius from South Africa with our 1 year old son.

My father's family is from Mauritius and we have visited on holiday before (back in 2009) so we know just how beautiful and magical a place it is however my cousin recently visited family there and did a bit of digging into emigrating.

Her concerns which she shared with me when I told her we were thinking of moving were mainly cost of living such as rentals, international medical aid, schools etc.

It hasnt put me off but I do want to go into this will all the facts and my eyes wide open.

My husband is in negotiations for a job paying between 1500 and 2000 Euros per month. I wouldnt work at first but would eventually looking at buying or starting my own small business.

To live COMFORTABLY, what sort of income is needed on average?

Would also really appreciate some advice on the following:-

Real estate agencies with most listings (I would DIE for a beach front property!!!)
Employment agencies
Health insurance/ medical aid
Schools

Hi,

the thread "cost of living in Mauritius" might be useful to get an idea of the costs implied for living here. A beach front house, depends also on the house and the beach class (A) for example might cost EUR 2000 per month or more...

A useful site of the government is this one when planning to move over here:

Starting your own little business will require applications and approval - for example if you plan a business in tourism, and when you go to the tourism authority it says in BIG before doing anything, write your LETTER OF INTENT - without their OK you can't start...

Looking at this page, concerning starting your own little business:

It says there "Self-employed 聽聽 Income from the business activity should exceed MRU 600,000 annually with an initial investment of USD 35,000 or its equivalent in freely convertible foreign currency." 1 year isn't much, sometimes business just takes longer to grow. I wonder what happens if in the first year someone doesn't make an income of EUR 15 000.

Looks to me like a filtering process, to filter out start ups and to take in people that are kind of already established with a working business model.

This brings it to the point - do we locally have an atmosphere/environment that will incite foreigners to do startups in Mauritius? Does the information on the BOI website send out a positive signal in this respect ?
