Returning citizen wanting to bring vehicle back

Vanessa.ap

Hi All,

I have decided to return home to MU after 24 years of living abroad. Therefore I’ll be a returning citizen. I am currently doing my researches on vehicle, is it easy and viable to bring a vehicle back to MU. Has anyone been through this process recently? Does anyone know the procedures? Any guidances as to where to find the relevant information & advices would be well appreciated.

Thank you.

You will find all the regulations online int he relevant ministry website. All I can say is that it might be better to buy locally, all things considered, unless you have a special vehicle in mind. Even then, repair and maintainance might be a headache.

Hi

Welcome a la case depart. As returning citizen after more than 2 life sentence in blighty I also took the plunge. I did some research on bringing back a motorcar but decided against it. While it is correct to say as returning citizen you can bring back a car duty free you still have to pay the dreaded vat ie at  top rate ie 18 % on the value of the car. Plus the restrictions you are not allowed to sell loan the car within 4 years after dedouanement. I don't know where you are based, to ship a car from UK to mru cost, before red sea problems was around £ 2000. I would bet the cost has doubled by now.

You can buy an electric or hybrid car duty free in mru and the government will refund part of the vat till June 2024. I would also add as returning citizen above 60 you can travel free buses and tramway. Lastly the syle of driving in mru is aggressive enough to give you a heart attack.

@gsamsoon thank you for your response, I agree re the MU driving! :) I'll do some more intensive research as per Tookays advice. If anyone has just returned within the past 12months and gone through this process, I would love to hear from you & your experience. So please do get in touch! Good day. V
