Tax Advice:Tax Residency UK to Mauritius

dawny1307

Hi. Can anyone please give tax advice or recommend a good Tax Adviser please?

We're planning to move to Mauritius later this year. My husband works remotely for a large multinational company. We're currently very confused about the tax situation; about the Statutory Residency Test and whether we qualify for UK tax residency when we are living in Mauritius. We are trying to figure out how many "Residency Ties" we qualify for .. but we realised that my husband would have to return to the UK for a period of time (ég; 46 days) to retain residency here. Another possibility that has been offered by my husband's company is that he move to being self-employed and he issues invoices to them for his time on tasks instead of being an employee... But then we have to figure out pension and we don't know how to do that either!?

So we seem to have 2 options and we're unsure about either;

1: Remain tax resident here in UK and return periodically to maintain that residency.

2: Ditch the UK residency and go self-employed as a remote contractor.

It seems to me that's it's completely not worth remaining a tax resident?! I can't see any advantages at all ..? But I might be missing key pieces of info.. hence this post.

If we go with with Number 2, don't we have to pay tax SOMEWHERE!? Maybe in Mauritius...? I mean, no-one gets away with NO tax surely? 🤔

Yh, I'm a bit stumped...

Thanks in advance guys and gals.

I'm not a tax expert. However, tax in Mauritius is 15%. If you're a tax resident in Mauritius it would be far lower than what you pay in the UK. This is one of the primary strengths that Mauritius has. It is a low tax jurisdiction. My situation is similar and I'm choosing to be a Mauritian tax resident.

@SafferCA .  as far as I know the tax brackets in Mauritius have changed. It is still low compared to many other countries.
