Stuck in legal rigmarole

sv250616

How to open a local bank account for a minor who is British, and does not live on the island, but Mauritian decent by mother.

No one is able to assist in the banking sector as everyone is quoting different rules and no one seems to be sure.

Want to open one from overseas.

Thanks.

Banking is very tightly controlled. Without proof of Mauritian residence, I doubt you'll be able to open an account. You can try ABSA Mauritius. They do account applications online.

Have you tried joint-name account?

@Pandora At Dodoland

Thanks. I am a British citizen as well and do not have Mauritian nationality.

I mean if you want to set up an account for a minor, try joint-name account with either parents.

Like SafferCA suggests, try ABSA. You can open an account with them online. But almost for sure they will drive you crazy like any other banks in Mauritius. My experience - I gave them my "address" in Mauritius. But they sent the documents to the address where I used to live in HK. When the HK courier couldn't deliver, they Googled my HK office but didn't input the floor and unit. So the documents travelled all over HK, then returned back to their Mauritius office, then to me. I don't know if it's just me or usual "inefficient" banking services in the island. Anyway, good luck.

To be absolutely honest, it is not going to happen as it stands.

If mother is resident in Mauritius, she can have ner joint account with her child, probably.

@Tookays

Thanks. Mother does not live in the island, as we are separated, however grandparents are still living in Mauritius. I am in good terms with them.

In that case, it will probably be better to wait until your child becomes an adult and see if he/she wants to go to Mauritius. They can then open an account with the grandparents address as their address. Does your child have dual nationality? That would make life much easier for them. Most banks in Mauritius will not open an account for him/her at this time.

Best wishes.

As someone who is physically on the island and struggling to open a bank account, I think I can safely say that you won't be able to do this.  Proof of address will be your problem. Incidentally it is also mine as I am not yet in long-term accommodation, having recently arrived.

Proof of address, in Mauritius, is mandatory when opening an account, and the banks are rigid about it.  I would be very surprised, unfortunately, if you were able to open a bank account for someone who cannot prove their address here.
