Is there someone here who is knowledgeable about automatic water pumps?

AussieInMauritius

My water pump is turning on too often (every 5-20 minutes) even if I am not using water. Is there anyone here who could check/repair/replace it for me? I would prefer someone who could actually do it. Referrals are hard to get hold of. Thanks.

Unless you are able to fix the issue yourself, I would strongly suggest you get someone qualified.

The system is very simple, just a switch, weights, and a float, but not knowing what you're doing us an effective way to accidentally commit suicide.

It's mains electricity, thus should be treated with caution.

@Fred

It is the pump that takes water into the house & apparently easy to change - took a worker about 15 minutes last time. The problem is trying to find someone qualified who is available.

Fred

It's easy to do, but dangerous if you are unaware.

Best guess is it's the switch in the tank

I can't suggest places , but it's an electricians job

Poor quality pump can last at least 3 years. But poor quality job doesn't last long. We had similar problem 1.5yrs ago (not my house). We found out there was a leaking from a worn out pipe. After my neighbor fixed the pipe, the pump working properly. Your pipes may not be well connected. Or the taps may have dripping problem. But it also could be the controller doesn't work properly. All you need is a certified plumber, not engineer or scientist.

There are few things to go wrong in such a simple system:

  1. It could be that the tank is emptying but the motor is damaged so cuts out.
  2. It could (more likely) be the switch in the tank. These are exposed to weather so the most likely to fail. This possible fault best describes your issue.
  3. A slow leak in the tank or one of the pipes is also possible. That would also cause the same problem. If that is the fault, assuming water flow is roughly even, the pump switch should trip at the same number of minutes every time.

You have a leak somewhere in your water network. Have the leak checked before you change the pump.

A qualified man came out yesterday & did things to check pump - apparently pump & motor is ok. When they disconnected it from house hose the pump worked fine. There is a possible leak in my solar. So they are coming back today with a ladder to check it out.  Will see what happens.

@AussieInMauritius

Most likely it is a leak in your water lines or as you say, on your solar unit. Random starting/stopping of your pressure pump is indicative of this. A system pressure test will identify and confirm this.

AussieInMauritius

@Malgun9

I think that is one of the tests they did. They did tests to eliminate every reason except some kind of leak & the pump worked fine. I just hope the leak is not underground!

Update - business that came yesterday are now ghosting my messages and phone calls.

AussieInMauritius

So solar leak fixed & pump working. I now need someone to fix the leak in the toilet. Is there anyone here that does this. It is leaking from plastic tube thingy (lol) under the toilet. TIA.

the_expert

Alternatively you can add a pressure vessel to the system to reduce the load on the pump

AussieInMauritius

@the_expert

Pump was fine. It was leak in solar that caused pump to turn on every few minutes. Leak in toilet does not affect pump because it is from water going out.

@AussieInMauritius

DM me, I may be able to advise you on what to do but I need more details first.

AussieInMauritius

Woohoo toilet no longer leaking. In case anyone else has this problem. The plastic thing that leaks is called a pan flexible & cost 175r. It cost me 1000r to get it fixed. Toilet leak did not cause pump to run every 5 minutes though - the leak in solar water inlet did that & pump is fine. Thanks for your help guys.

My water pump needs priming every second day or so, is this normal ?  It's quite frustrating that the water switches off so frequently.  Anyone have any ideas or recommendations please

Pandora At Dodoland

@RusselS

The controller maybe worn out. If the pump is the fully automatic one, you may need to get a controller.

Malgun9

@RusselS

If you're pump is drawing water from an underground water tank, then it is very likely the intake foot valve is defective and requires replacement.

Malgun9

@Pandora At Dodoland

The pump controller or APC unit doesn't influence the priming of the pump. It's function is to monitor supply side pressure, i.e., between the pump outlet and the house.

RusselS

@Malgun9 thanks for the info.  who can i get to check it out and repair it please
