My journie has just begun

j0rg1

Hi all!
I have just moved to Mauritius to study via the internet in Norway.
It is winter in Norway now and summer in Mauritius, before I left Norway I had to change to winter-tires on my car, so this says it all... :)
Also the cost of living here is much better than at home.

I have had a couple of days here, my landlord and his family are really nice and not at least very helpful. I live in a nice and new apartment on top of his house with chickens in the backyard. (this is new to me) :)

I seem to have just a couple of problems, I need to get a cheap printer for my schoolwork, where to get this in Grand Bay?

And

I have found one public beach, but are struggeling to find a long fine beach like they have on the east side of the Island. Any of those here in the North? In walking distance from Grand Bay center. I walked through a couple of nice one, but these are hotel beaches, not public. The let me pass without saying anything, but I was thinking respectfuly about not setting my "base" there...

Small "problems", but I just got to ask :)
Thank you!
And please give me a heads-up when there one of those Ex-pat evenings again, I whould really like to meet new people and have a laugh.

Welcome j0rg1 !

About the printers I don't really know, but note that you can order in Quatre bornes or anywhere else and get it delivered to Grand Bay.

About the beaches, you should try mon choisy, trou aux biches (my favourite), and pereybere ;)

All the best,

Julien

Hi j0rg1 !!

Nice to hear that you already had a little walk in Grand Bay. That's true beaches in the north are very nice with blue lagoon and most of the time during weekend it's crowded. These beaches ( Mont Choisy, Trou aux Biches and pereybere)you could go by Bus (very cheap!!!). It will take only  5-10mins to get there..

Why you dont want to rent a printer... if you are here only for few months???
Or.. try to look at Gallaxy (the Complex next to Super u - Grand Bay they can order one for you from showroom ).... you can find a cheap printer at Cash&carry!!! Harel Mallac,Data communication ltd, DNL in Port Louis.
For how long you will be in Mauritius?

Hope this help.

All the best.

Ahhh... I think I had to little to drink and to little to eat earlier. The title of my post is all wrong. My journey has begun was it suppose to say:) Well well...

I was thinking about staying for 6 months, I've just got a 2 months visa now, but I am applying for a longer one within these months. My landlord sayed we could write me a letter saying that I'm staying with his family, getting 6 months. Is this a good idea? Is it not better for me to write my own application?

About the printer, I was shopping at the SuperU today and I saw the store called Galaxy, they had a couple of printers, so I think I'll buy one there. About 2400RS for a brand new photo-printer. The walls in my apartment are all empty, so I could print som pictures from home to make it a bit more like cosy. :) I need one fast, so I think I'll go for that one.

Thank you so much for you help, I'll check out the beaches after I have printed all my schoolpapers.
It's a book-bindery very close to where I live, so I'll go in an have all my papers binded into a book. Brilliant!
I am so much enjoying my stay here in Mauritius!

Now all I need to do is learn some creol :) Got any tips on that?

I have trouble comming in contact with some of the members because they or the system has blocked private messaging, I just got to ask... If someone sends an private message, is it not wise to unblock this option if you want an respons... =)

Anyways! I am having a great time here, the weather could be better, but back in my hometown they have about -6 degrees at night now. So I am not so bad :)
I got the printer, but I bought the wrong brand I think. I had to go all the way to port-lois to get new ink and I bought the last one they had. Just ordered refillable catridges from New-York, so hope I'll have enough ink until they arrive. Really troubling to find the shop in port lois and just that I bought the last one is a bit sad. I am printing about 300 pages pr. day, so maybe I should have bought a laserprinter... What's done, is done! No point of complaining :)

Dear j0rg 1

I was thinking about staying for 6 months, I've just got a 2 months visa now, but I am applying for a longer one within these months. Well j0rg 1, the mode of extension of your stay in Mauritius is dependent on the initial visa you have, meaning whether it is a Tourist Visa or some other visa.

As such it would not be wise to advise you without this prior and essential information.

I am printing about 300 pages pr. day, so maybe I should have bought a laser printer... What's done, is done! No point of complaining.

I am just wondering whether it is economically viable to go through your personal printing facilities, even if you ordered refillable cartridges from New York.

For such big volumes of around 300 pages per day, I would have rather advised that you go for printing services from some companies, as I do whenever I have big volumes to print. No fuss about paper, ink, cartridges, and maintenance, etc, and the cost is much lower.

I could transmit you the contact number of this service provider if you so wish.

By the way, wish you a warm welcome in the Paradise Island, a worthy experience before going to he real paradise or ... hell!!!

Kind regards:|
