Customs on personal items sent as cargo with an airplane

chrismalherbe

Hi everyone,

My kayak could not fit as checked baggage, so I sent it via cargo to Mauritius via SAA cargo.

It arrived on a public holiday, so I could not get it on the day of arrival. I spoke to someone at customs over the phone and said that I need to get a permit first and then I need an agent to help me clear the kayak.

Is this correct and has anyone done this type of thing before?

Can you advise me on where to find an agent and what the costs will be approximately?

Hi, perhaps you could try calling the local SAA agent in Mauritius.

Vedan

You have to get a cargo handling agent and it is quite possible that SAA have those clerks who will get your bill of lading to get the processes going. The agent are called "Courtier Maritime"!! They will charge you a fee of around Rs12,000 and it does NOT matter how many items you have brought. You have to declare the price of your KAYAK and you can get away with this as your "personal effects"!!
As you have sent this by SAA(I mean by air) you will have to go to Plaisance NOT at the actual airport but at the Customs headquarters/Storage area.  I have been though that process many years ago and again recently with my cousin who is an ex BA staff.  The experience is NOT that great!!  This is why I send stuff by sea freight now!!
Please call your SAA agent in Mauritius to guide you.
