If you get internet package from EMTEL or MAURITIUS TELECOM or other providers they will normally include in the set up the internet router. This is the gateway into your home. Most have several sockets on them for input of signal down the wire or fibre optic the standard internet or cat5 sockets that look like phone sockets to connect directly to the internet by cable. Also most devices also known as routers have what looks like a transistor radio aerial attached . It is the 'wifi' part of the router as we should call them now. Within the router you have storage and software that controls the user access to your system by means of identification , this is like the two items needed to use an ATM where you need your back card and pin number. IN wifi terms you need two things to connect your phone or tablet to your wifi. You will need the identification of your router it will come with a strange sounding string of letters and numbers like 'XST45Rq23' or anything that is called the default from the supplier. To help in some ways there is usually a sticker on the bottom of the router with this default identification . The second item is like your pin number it is a password , again this can be anything that is set up by default and this can be also printed on the sticker.Â
You may ask why do i have the sticker, well if things go wrong or the setting get corrupted there is normally a set to default factory codes which is what is on the sticker.
How do you change these two items to your own settings.
You should get a manual that explains how to go into the settings of the router by means of using a connected computer or phone or tablet.
again you will have another id and password to type in on the screen and this is normally factory set to something like admin or user and the password is the same. again when you have to do a factory reset these are set to the starting values.
It is recommended to change the wifi password from the factory setting and if you are comfortable you can change the name of the device to something you understand better. I say this because the factory names on the fibre optic broadband can often be very similar. You can also and should change the router admin name and password so that nobody can get into the system and change your wifi name and password. IF you leave it at factory settings then everyone who has the same type of router will have the same admin and password.
Once you have the router set up and connected on your tablet smart phone or laptop etc you will have settings for wifi connection and simply you select your router from the list that pops up , there could be several if you live close to many people who have internet , you then put in your password and many phones and tablets will store this for you a s a preference so that next time you connect to the same router it is automatic.
Finally try and change the passwords on a regular basis , because if you let friends and neighbours use the wifi to send messages and look at Facebook they then can use your wifi for free as long as they are in range of your router and can pick up your wifi signal. Now if you opt for the cheapest internet service you may get a capped allowance on how much data you can use per month. Everytime you visit a webpage or down load a picture from face book it uses part of your data allowance, so if somebody knows your wifi access codes because you let them use it once they can download films etc and gobble all your monthly allowance without you knowing
