Stray/street dogs in Mauritius

FeeAcer

Personally, I don't agree with maurilady and Nadsmeister!:/

Indeed when I was living in Trou aux Biches (morcellement Jhubo, many dogs where roaming about on the street when I was walking my grandson.

And I can assure you that I was not feeling at ease with them (although I have a dog of myself) as they were very aggressive. And I used to meet with other people who would tell me about when they were attacked by one of them and that now they are walking with a stick for defense!

And I personally noticed many people in the morcellement who would leave their gate open for their dogs to roam on the streets!

At some houses you can count till 5 dogs! If you can't feed them, don't take in so many! Take only one and care for it properly... then you don't have to let them out to find their own food!

This really is an irresponsible behavior on their part!

There are a few roaming dogs on Morcellement Jhuboo, but the majority of them are owned by people. They are usually let out to go to the toilet or to search for food as the owners do not feed them.As Nedsmeister stated the majority of them are afraid of humans. You can see people walk past stray dogs in almost every part of Mauritius without incidence. Of course we know this is unacceptable, but as I have said previously people need to be educated to look after their dogs. The government have announced new plans to deal with the chien errant problem. Lets hope that it works.

I've lived in Floreal and now Vacoas and while there are few strays around my areas, I stopped walking my dogs as it was just too difficult.  The worst dogs were the ones that ran out of their garden to defent the properties; the strays were a bit shyer, but even they sometimes tried to aggress my dogs.

I am leaving Mauritius this weekend and the thing I am looking forward to most in Germany is walking my dogs again (they need to lose weight!) and taking them to the park to play and socialise with other dogs.

And there is NO rabies in Mauritius, so rats, strays etc can't pass it on, since it isn't here to infect them in the first place!

The worst place for strays I've seen is Peyrebere where I spend a lot of weekends

Well there is a definite problem with strays here and being a dog lover it is heart breaking to see. I haven't heard of any dog attacks although I am sure it does happen but the dogs are not as dangerous it seems. Don't aggravate them, ignore them and it should be fine. You will find them most places. I live in Flic en Flac and in a remote area in that area but there are still strays around. If you ignore them (even if they seem interested in you) they will not bother you. It is a problem I think should be dealt with humanly and even I if I ever get into a large sum of money would invest in fixing that.

You mainly have them in the main towns such as Quatre Borne and Vacoas but they are generally every where but they are not generally vicious. They even seem fed!

You will deal with them, I am pretty sure of that. Just be clever about it and start panicking and kicking the dog etc because then you will be looking for trouble. Just ignore them and they will ignore you for the most part.

Mauritius is a beautiful is;and and rich with culture so I think if you can accept the dog problem you would enjoy it here :)

Government should start awareness campaign for neutering dogs, the bill board that they have all over the place saying "my dog on the street!! No way" is silly.

I know so many people who got puppies as a gift because somebody was not able to take care of 5-6 puppies.

Back in Dublin I remember TV adverts advising people not to give animals as gifts.

this is Mauritius. The govt doesn't really care about whether you're getting bitten by dogs or starving to death.

I love animals, but I don't like seeing them anymore..they freak me out wherever am walking about with the kids. The domesticated ones can be more of a problem especially when their owners don't close their gates properly (was attacked by one a few weeks ago).

Another issue is the spacing between bars on the gates; nowadays those fancy ones tend to have a big enough gap that allows the doggies to literally pull your leg, arm or hand when you walk by.It's a nightmare when you have kids!!!!You have to walk on the road!

Hansa, i stoped going for walks since my arrival in Mauritius. Combination of too many dogs and no pavements.

I know a friend who came home to find that there were two dead stray dogs in his garden near his house, rotting from the heat, and the smell was unbearable. Somebody must have put some poison around.

It turned out that the responsibility was on my friend to get rid of the bodies (he was renting the house); he called the municipality and they sent two guys over just to tell him that since the dogs are on private property they can't do anything about it, they only deal with dead dogs within the public realm. So my friend had to burn the dogsÂ’ bodies and then burry them.

People told me that the government used to carrying out dog culling in every town but it does not look like they are doing that anymore.

Indeed Mariam, they don't anymore. I don't see the MSPCA vans anywhere!

I think it's time to draw their attention to this problem.

If anyone has contacts to which we can try and get the dog problem under control, please give it to me. Even if it may be in years to come, a process in which we can plan and start something is something to work on.

Coming to this country and seeing all the stray dogs, I made a goal of mine to do something about it. I just thought I wouldn't have the resources but I guess I can have initiative and do something now so if anyone has contacts with people who have dealt or know of people who can give me a number or advice would be much appreciated.

Mariam A

Hey SAsebastian,

Contact Paws, , see what advice they could give. Also, contact your local municipality and see what plans they have to control the stray dog situation in the area (that is if they do have plans).

Like i said in my previouse post that Vacoas municipality have a department that deals with removing dead dogs from the public streets but not sure what they are doing about all the packs of dogs roaming the public streets and around the popular food courts.

Good luck
