Looking for reliable builder for roofing install

barryn56

Hi all. I had a bad experience with a rogue trader who ruined the waterproofing on my bungalow, so now it is leaking everywhere (and is now trying to sue for the rest of the money - why is there no  consumer protection in Mauritius?).

So decided to have a roof put over the concrete flat roof. I have a design done, now looking for a very reliable builder to construct and install. Appreciate any comments or references.

Regards,

Barry

Hello,

There is a Consumer protection Unit in Mauritius. Most cases are settled through friendly agreements but some go to a district or intermediate court.

Here's a list of builders and contractors in Mauritius:

Thanks Winston - I'd like to know how, and who to contact in, the consumer protection unit. I tried their email address listed on their website, which bounced, of course.

Dear Barry ,
Very sorry that this happened to you . In Mauritius you have to do you homework well. In Australia people sue everyone for everything but no here you should learn to take a bite of responsibility for their decisions. If you had to do a heart surgery would you post it online to look for a doctor ? Would you go on the yellow page an pick the first heart doctor on the list?
A little background research will do you good.

Thanks for the comments, Karen. Apart from the fact I did some research, I also had a detailed written contract - none of which helps when there are problems because the cost of legal actions in Mauritius make directly accessing justice a no-win scenario. What is more of an issue is why people in Mauritius seem unwilling to change the systems in place to provide a more just environment, but are happy to say "let the buyer beware". This has a direct impact on investment and should be a point of pride for a country to achieve a standard that allows everyone the same rights for justice, irrespective of how much money they have/how well connected they are. The democratic system is designed to let everyone have a say in the portfolio of the political system - just seems no one is interested in standing for those rights. A shame, as Mauritius becomes a paradise lost.

Thanks to all for responses. I decided to carry out repairs myself, which went very well. I plan to complete the work with a fibreglass covering.
