Should I move to Abuja?

Katiejane03

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice on whether or not I should move to abuja with my boyfriend.
We've been together for almost three years now and met in the UK when he was doing his masters degree. He moved back to Nigeria just over a year ago due to his visa expiring before his results were released so therefore couldn't apply for a working permit.
He now has a very good job over there and eventually, when he has more money and is stable, wants me to move out there with him.
I visited Abuja in December and met the family, everyone was so lovely and I had a great time....but that was only for one week.
My fears are, that after reading a lot of forums, it seems quite difficult to meet people and as I wont be an '°µÍø½ûÇø' I wont be socialising with other people in my position.
I'm nervous that I wont be be able to find work - although I am considering volunteer work with children as I did this in South Africa for a while and loved every moment.
I suppose I'm just looking for reassurance that I can be happy in Abuja and not relying on my boyfriend as my only friend. How easy do you think it will be for me to integrate into society over there? All advice welcome, thanks.

Hi Katiejane03,

Welcome to °µÍø½ûÇø! :)

Hey,

I think if you love him and he is a good person you will be fine. Marrying a Nigerian should not stop you from socializing with other °µÍø½ûÇøs and your hubby would understand that you need your own friends.

If you have already been here then you should have a good idea of whether or not you can live here. Maybe you should take another trip down and search for a job on that trip to help you determine if the big step is worth it. Can't say too much about Abuja as I do not live there, but besides the heat a lot of people seem to prefer it to Lagos as it is more quiet, has less traffic and better infrastructure.

Goodluck!

Thanks Camilletolu for your advice, I'm planning to go over again in June for a bit longer this time. I can't imagine not being with him, so if this is the only way then I will give it ago, I have nothing to lose I guess :) ... Thanks again!
