The Rainy

Xiao6

Today is the Rainy day in Chinese traditional calendar. From this day, the snowfall decreases and the rainfall increases gradually.

Traditionally, Chinese married daughters would bring the parents some silk fabrics as gifts on this day.

Maybe silk fabrics are not easy to find nowadays. Give your parents a pleasant phone greeting, it will bring your parents happiness all the day.

Yes, you are right. Here are some ambiguities. A few more words are necessary.

The routine work of a common family in the ancient China, which the peasant economy plays an essential role in the society, is that the man plows and the woman weaves. Fabrics are daily products of almost every family, and the loom is nearly a standard device for each family. The home-made silk fabrics, comparing with the cotton fabrics of everyday use, are more precious, thus can be decent gifts.

At present, seldom–if not no–common family has a loom or the raw materials for weaving, thus weaving something as a gift is not practical. Fortunately, numerous choices are available in the supermarkets, and if silk fabrics are wanted, as you mentioned, the machine-made products are all around the world.
