I have a rough idea about it but actually my Indonesian wife took care of everything and i just followed her instructions. Also that was 16 years ago so no idea if the process has changed or not.

PS. Check out the Australian Aged Pension rules before you make the move . They've got a 2 year portability rule where if you're living O/Seas and not living in a country that has a social security agreement with Australia you have to return to Australia to apply for it and live there , Australia, for 2 years before the pension becomes fully portable and you can return to Indonesia . If you're already on the pension you may loose it if you move O/Seas without notifying them and have to return to Australia and re-apply and stay there for 2 years before it becomes fully portable and you can move back to Indonesia again . Australia has no social security agreement with Indonesia and most other S/E Asian countries .

No, don't use an agent.

A spouse KITAS is easy and you can do it yourself without getting ripped off by an agent.

Come on a tourist visa or Sosbud, and apply at your local immigration office.

NEVER use a ripoff agent

Totally agree with Fred. No need to use an agent. We did it ourselves, actually my local Indonesian wife told me what I needed to do by asking questions at the immigration office. Back then most of the migration staff dealing with °µÍø½ûÇøs couldn't speak a word of English but things are a lot different nowadays with younger staff that speak English pretty well.

@wyngrove60 Totally agree if your wife's capable and the immigration office is close by . Different story when your wife lives in a remote fishing village and has had limited education and the local Immigration office is a 6-7 hour return drive away .

@joegroper. Yeah I can imagine. When I did my first Kitas the immigration staff didn't speak English (how useless is that), but nowadays things are much better. They can tell you clearly what to do in English, so still worth doing it yourself without an agent in my opinion.

@wyngrove60 Due to go back late 2026 to apply for the unlimited/lifetime Kitap so fingers crossed they've lifted there game over here in S/E Java . Did everything , kitas extension , conversion to kitap etc myself which was a walk in the park once you can speak and understand the language . That first kitas was a nightmare , 4 trips to immigration, 2 for nothing when documents I was told I needed weren't required . A trip back to Oz waiting on approval from the Director General , etc etc etc .
