2400km walk in Japan

Sar Walking Feat

Hey!
I'm Sarah and I'm looking for some help! In April 2012 I'm doing my third long distance walk, and this one is going to be in Japan.  The reason why I'm doing it is here walkingfeat.com

I'm going to need a mobile and internet access while I'm walking but I've heard it's really expensive...anyone know how to do this cheaply?

Also I'm looking to link in with mental health services in Japan (the walk is to raise awareness of mental health) can anyone help with this?

And, I'm a PhD candidate, my area of research is mental health.  I'm really keen to trial some Japanese therapy...any suggestions?

Thanks!
Sar

Hi Sarah,

That's an interesting plan. I admire you. (I also love to walk/hike/run.)

Renting a cell phone is very easy. Most of my friends who rent phones ahead of time use Softbank, so I'll paste their link below:

If you type "cell phone rental" and "Narita" in google you'll come up with tons of other options.

Regarding therapy, do you mean therapy for a specific kind of condition? In Japan, psychiatrists typically have 5-10 minute sessions and prescribe medicine. They are also paid under the national health insurance scheme, so it might not work or even be very valuable for you to set up an appointment with one. Are interested in alternative therapies (i.e. osteopathy, kind of like massage in Japan, acupuncture, or shiatsu)? Such an experience might be more valuable/interesting.

Hi Sarah,

Sorry-- one more thing. To link with a mental health agency, try the Tokyo English Lifeline (TELL).
Here's their website.

They might hook up with you or give you suggestions.
