Air BnB alternative?

Ziggy With It

I see that Air BnB has plenty of listings in Malaysia.  But I was wondering if there was a more "local" option and whether or not it might be even more cost-effective for my exploratory excursion into the area.  I'm thinking that JB is where I'll end up, so if there's something that focuses there it would be even more useful for me.

If you are retired then why are you interested to move to live in Johor Baru? Is it just to be close to Singapore? Maybe if the Air BnB's are too expensive then look for some really cheap hotels in town. But curious why you are interested in JB.

I'm a very lazy guy.  I absolutely hate walking.  The only thing I've found that will get me up and moving is disc golf and there is much more disc golf in JB than KL so it will provide me more variety.  If it weren't for that I'd probably end up in Penang.

But the nearest disc golfing to Penang is over 200 miles/322 km.  There is less disc golf in Thailand and the rest of that area seems to be lacking in the English department.  There is only one course in The Philippines and their electricity/wifi tends to fail regularly.  I can't find any disc golfing at all in Indonesia.

I've also managed to get it stuck in my head that I want to get an apartment/condo overlooking the strait and have also kind of become obsessed with Forest City.

Edit:  It's not that Air BnB is too expensive as it appears to be the most economical way to find a place that I'm aware of.  I'm just a cheap bastard and pinching every penny I get in my hand.  Also, their fees seem to be excessive.  Not for me, but for the property owner.  I don't mind paying but I want the property owner to be treated fairly by the agency.

You could try Facebook marketplace. What I do myself (I usually only stay a couple of months at a time) is just book something for a week on Airbnb see if I like it and then ask the owner directly if he/she wants to rent it out directly to me for x months.

Thanks!  I'm a bit wary of using Marketplace due to the high percentage of scams here in The States.  Do you find it reliable in Asia?

Definitely less reliable then airbnb, no recourse if things go wrong. But you should meet with them first at the apartment/villa.

For KL I've only used airbnb though, found KL apartments quite affordable as it is :).

I absolutely never trust FB Marketplace because there is no protection and full of scammers here in Asia too. I would just stay well away from it.
