Can anyone advise me how nice Penang is and living there, compared to Thailand or Philippines?

Its has a more western atmosphere and is not primarily a holiday destination. Immigration is quite strict in terms of needing long-term visa rather than just tourist entries to live on Penang island.

It's quite a lot more expensive so higher COL. It's a major retirement destination.with lots of people on the Malaysia my 2nd Home visa

About 75% of locals are of Chinese origin. It has a quite sophisticated society with lots of culture and festivals. But generally it's quite a sleepy destination with very limited night life and very little sleeze.
