Islam Conversion

Birthdays

Hello everyone,

I am from the UK, England.

I am planning to marry my girlfriend who lives in Malaysia and she is a Muslim. To do that I am aware that I will have to convert to Islam. However, I am not sure where to begin with that. So my worries are:
1. Where is the best place to convert? In my home region, or in Malaysia?
2. Is there a proof of conversion?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all.

I suggest u to revert at your place. It's important for u to start learning about Islam and be prepared for your big day. Then when u come to Malaysia as a revert Muslim, your future wife may bring u to meet with the authority to verify that u are a Muslim before u get married.

There are few other reasons why u should revert at your place. First, to avoid any "fitnah" among people who may think u revert just for the sake of getting married instead of truly believe Islam is the true religion. Second, it's more easy for u to mingle around with the family of your future wife and their acceptance towards the new u. Third, u will be asked questions about Islam by the Imam or the Father of the bride during the "nikah" and u may want to take "wudhu" and perform "sholat" after "ijab and qabul".

P.s
We call "revert" instead of "convert" because u now coming back to your fitrah (since born), which is submitting your will to the one true god.

If I may make a suggestion.
Call the Malaysia high commission in London

Malaysian High Commission
45 Belgrave Square, Belgravia, London SW1X 8QT, United Kingdom

If you convert at a place they recommend, you'll find they give you a very nice certificate to show you make the declaration of faith.

Fred

You can convert in Malaysia

Here would be good and they'll issue an ID card

Dewan Syarahan dan Muzakarah Islam Masjid Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah
Seksyen 14, 40000 Shah Alam, Selangor, Malaysia

Weddings in Malaysia are pretty easy as long as you have the correct paperwork
You'll  need a certificate of no impediment from your local registry office.

Thank you Fred, as the post above you have been very helpful.
One final question if you are able to answer. Do you have experience with Nikah? I'm curious if the Imam will ask questions before the Nikah that I should be prepared for.

Fred

I got married in Malaysia, but a long time ago so the rules might have changed. All they asked me was to recite the declaration of faith, and that was about that other than confirming I was stupid enough to marry the cow .. sorry, my lovely lady

I converted at the Malaysian High Comm many moons ago. You get a nice certificate that is accepted in Malaysia.

As always in Malaysia paperwork is just a useless tick box exercise. It can be sped up with kopi duit but smile and give face and usually everything is ok.

The tick box list is available online easily and at via your fiancees imam.

Don't forget you will need to do the marriage course in Malaysia.

When did that start? We never bothered (14 years ago).
However, we seem to have got the hang of the basics as we have two kids :D
