Canadian IT man told to leave Nepal

mireillelagardere

Still very much consiering the possibility to come and settle in Nepal for an indefinite period, but
I must admit I was taken back to surf Google recently only to learn that in May 2016 it was reported that
this canadian man, Robert Penner,a software designer, had been arrested and given only 2 days to leave the country. It appears that his ouster made the headlines in Kathmandu's highly respected Kathmandu Post newspaper.
Assuming the story to be correct, I think not only me but other foreigners would like to know what really happened to this software designer, to merit such harsh treatment in such a peaceful country as Nepal?

Surely °µÍø½ûÇøs in Nepal must have heard this story. What's their take?

Here's a nice tale of caution for °µÍø½ûÇøs in more than just one country.

According to immigration officials, the political commentating is a violation of the provisions of his work visa. A Nepalese work visa can be rescinded from someone if he or she is found to have caused public unrest. Department of Immigration Director General Kedar Neupane said Penner's tweets caused "social discord."

He involved himself in sensitive local politics, something that's almost always a very bad idea. The rights and wrongs, along with arguments about free speech are nothing when it comes to upsetting the wrong people.
