The amount depends on how long you intend to stay in Australia. This amount must cover all travel and accommodation costs. You should be able to explain to any customs and immigration officer at your port of entry where you intend to visit and what you will do in Australia. Best you have a travel and accommodation itinerary organized before you travel over so that you can show this to the officer.
