I will be traveling to the Philippines in June. I plan on working in a hospitality position. Any guidance would be great. Thank you

So you only speak English and you expect to support yourself working as a bar tender on a tourist visa? What is plan B?

GuestPoster7878

There really is no plan b. Im an experienced bartender trying to further my knowledge by bartending over seas even if it means working in a hotel in a touristy part of the Philippines. Im obviously not coming broke but the goal is to work and learn and be able to at least pay for living costs. What do you suggest?

I suppose the questions are:
is working as a bartender legal?
is the money you could earn worth the bother?

I gather the average salary for such is about $250/month so perhaps creating a better thought out plan B might be a good idea.

I could be wrong on this one but, I do believe that work of any kind in the Philippines for a foreigner doing a job that a Filipino could do, is pretty much a no go here.

Add to that, you cant work on tourist Visa so that would require a $20K US deposit for a Visa that would permit working, if youre 50 or over which you dont look like you are based on your profile pic.
Having said that, plan on plunking down $50K to be able to stay here and work and I still dont know that youd be able to work as a bartender as that would I believe, qualify as taking a job from a local. Good luck!

It is true that the best bartenders in the Philippines usually can make better money elsewhere. Many are fortunate to get jobs on cruise ships. The hours are long, working 7 days a week. If you want to see the world while tending bar a cruise ship might be worth investigating. If you work on a cruise ship you will meet many Filipinos and Filipinas.

Good Grief,

Every college graduate in the Philippines is in Hospitality. You want to compete for a job against millions of unemployed Hospitality grads? If you do land a job it won't pay the rent.

Never mind no plan "B", because you don't have a plan "A" either.

Hello,

I will advise you not to venture in a journey you will not be able to complete.

There are millions of Grad unemployed filipinos here. So how are you going to compete this with people?

Do you speak Tagalog as well?. as the primary Language in the Philippine is Tagalog.

So, think twice before you venture.

You are better off working here in Singapore, before we tighten our hiring for foreigners. We have new establishments up and coming.

Me too. Moving in June to Philippines from Morocco.

As you are American probably the best chance of getting a legal bartending job here would be to apply to one of the American resort/hotel chains that have property here and see if they would consider hiring you for and obtaining a work visa for you in the Philippines. Probably would be the best bet for getting a higher salary too.

Okay, lets try this again.

Bureau of Immigration announces tougher regime on foreign work permits

This is to ensure that these work permits are issued only to aliens whose jobs could not be performed by Filipinos, the commissioner said.

Seems to me that bartending is a job that Filipinos could/can/and do perform all over the country.

Hi
Your profile says you want to be in Phuket, Thailand! If you want to do bartending in Thailand go online to Hua Hin forum for 做厙輦⑹s! Excellent site with serious help!!!! By the way the beach there is everything Phuket can offer and the 做厙輦⑹ community is at least 4000 Americans! They have a list of 做厙輦⑹ hangouts where you would have best chance! But no work with tourist visa! Good Luck!
