Will be visiting Patong and Pattaya for 3 months next year.

jkandsk2

We are from Canada and have been spending our winters in Mexico for the past few years and want to explore Thailand and possibly Vietnam and Cambodia. Can anyone give me some advice regarding grocery shopping, least busy beaches, best tours, etc...

We will be in Thailand from January to April.

Thank you for any information.

Not the best time to visit Thailand unless you live down south - that is the time of year when smoke and smog can be extreme - especially in the North.  I suggest you visit Phuket or Samui and stay there for at least a month each - they would be my choices for a long term stay.  Decide everything when you are here - impossible to decide exacty where from Canada. You may decide to try Hua Hin as well - good air there most of the year - and less tourists.

@jkandsk2 Since you will be traveling for 3 months, you can spend a month in each country, and a week in each city. Or you can have a spontaneous travel in case you had enough of that certain place. For grocery shopping, 7/11 is everywhere, there's also a forum for shopping /forum/211-21-shop … land.html.

One of the secluded beaches is Koh Yao, it is made up of two large islands, Koh Yao Noi and Koh Yao Yai, it is off the coast of Phuket. For the best tours, there are a lot of travel and tours, you need to take heed of the important things to look for or know the pros and cons  gowithguide.com/blog/hiring-a-guide-in-bangkok-pros-cons-5280 And do not forget Chiang Mai, it should be on your list before jumping to Cambodia and Vietnam.

Thank you!

How about shopping for groceries? Is it difficult to find things like coffee, beef, pork, fresh baked bread, milk, cream, etc...

Are bank machines readily available? If so, which are the best banks for withdrawal? We use the Plus bank card.

Of course ATM's are available. They are everywhere. Commercial banks, like for example Bangkok Bank and Kasikorn Bank accepts every card. When using a foreign card,a question will pop-up asking if you accept a certain exchange rate. ALWAYS press NO. If going for YES,you will get a lower rate. NO will give you the so called TT buy rate. There's only a minor difference in exchange rates between Thai banks. Nothing to worry about.

Best atm card to have is schwab bank, they refund all atm fees once a month.

Fees are not the most important thing,it's rates and never withdraw small amounts. Always go for the maximum amount. It's normally ฿20,000 or ฿30,000 depending on which bank you chose.

Personally, I used the china bank at the mall (not sure of the bank name) because it's English. I tried Bangkok's atms and had really a hard time which to press so ended up asking a local for help.
