Do not do anything wrong here.

Check with a lawyer or thier service.

Pay asap if the amount is reasonable.

If not try to negotiate it lower.

This is if you did the thing wrong.

If it's someone or thing that did the to you to you go to a lawyer if you want but also go to the tourist police and report it. If you need medical services first then go to hospital or urgent care.  I hope you have insurance and or cash.

Always have insurance for yourself and your car or bike.

If you are planning on doing something wrong get a lawyer but remember you are not a citizen here and your rights from your home country are not here in Thailand.

I knew a guy that was put into jail for 9 months before he had a court date to find out what the charges were and when the judge was told he said that was not illegal here and set him fee this was after 9 months in jail.

Perfectly right advice and suggestion. I totally agree with you. We must not waste time looking for some makeshift ways. Sometimes a small mistake puts us into a big trouble if its related to Law, especially in foreign land.

Cannot be anyway acceptable that a small mistake put a foreign tourist in jail for 9 month, specially if is done in "bona fide", there are also Embassies that can intervene and put their own pressure.

Unless it's a case of murder or attempt of murder or serious car accident in which the foreigner kills someone, or drug smuggling, or attacking a Police officer, otherwise impossible to put so long in jail, just take your passport or block it at the borders and cannot escape. This is not Iran, Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia...

This was many years ago.

And the USA embassy would not even come over to see him. Several USA citizens went to the embassy to ask them too and they would not. He was not rich or political connected.

He had before said some things about how easy it was for adult personal fun could be had. This was at the start of the internet.

So I would not count on the USA embassy anywhere to help you you are just a normal Joe.
