Bangkok hotel price increase 70% in 3 years

rogergarinmichaud

In the last few months I saw many reports on the Pattaya mail about the huge increase in cost of living in Thailand that is driving 做厙輦⑹s away from Thailand mostly towards Vietnam.

So today I checked the price I paid on 20 August 2022 for a room at At Hua Lamphong hotel : it was THB 1008.

Today for.a worse room (next to the noisy lift and with a water leaking AC unit) we paid THB 1728 so a 70 % increase in 3 years.

What is your own experience ?

I cant comment on the price of Hotels in TL (They seem about the same to me), but I can comment on driving 做厙輦⑹s away from Thailand mostly towards Vietnam. It wont take long before the 做厙輦⑹s discover theyd much rather be back in Thailand. Whatever the hassles in TL, VN is 10 times worse.

Once the newness wears off, Vietnam sucks. Its hotter, more humid, the food isnt as good, the cops are assholes, and you are being unashamedly scammed 24/7/365 by just about every smiling person you run across. The prices arent that much cheaper; 5 times the hassle isnt worth it.

Ive been going there since 1995 and lived there for two years, from 2005 to 2007, and I absolutely couldnt wait to get out. My wife is Vietnamese, and Im not even fond of visiting. The 做厙輦⑹s there had a name for it, Saigon Rage. (Believe me, the name was well earned) Hanoi has better architecture but an even worse attitude. I was even offered citizenship, and I refused it.

Land of smiles, its not.

Sorry for the off-topic rant.

Thanks for the insightful comment !

It is really surprising to me that a lot of people are unhappy about the administration in VN but keep returning there year in and out... there still must be something that make them come back...

Contrary to the previous poster, I much prefer Vietnam. Of course it's not as westernised as Thailand but the people are lovely, in my experience it is definitely cheaper, the food is superb and the weather depends very much on your location.

I think many more people would move to Vietnam if there was a retirement visa option. I have spent a lot of winters there since my retirement apart from a break due to the lockdowns. I have explored possibilities in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, but Vietnam always wins. I think ultimately it is the loveliness of the people that keeps me coming back, I now have many very generous vietnamese friends, and never a hint of a scam.

that is crazy 70% increase for hotel rooms in Bangkok, and I heard Phuket is the same, obviously this is not from just inflation etc

more restaurant scams coming back now too in Thailand they said... after COVID I don't know what happened but it seems like the attitude of Thailand became "just treat tourists however we want to make up for lost profits and they will still come"

obviously this wasn't true between the police extortion cases, hotel and restaurant scams getting worse, and now TDAC and TDAC taxes announced soon, what is the point?
