inside banking

mexicomo2

I'm an American living in Spain right now for the last two years and I love it. I'll be coming to Thailand in November for about 3 to 6 months. I had an unfortunate incident where the ATM ate my debit card and I had to send for a new one and the only way I could get it was that was sent to my sister in the United States and in she had to send it to me. Because I sent for it I don't have  a pin number and to avoid getting eaten by the ATM again I usually go inside the bank where I have an account and make my withdrawal using my debit card. Once I set up a bank account in Thailand Will I be able to go into the bank and make my withdrawals at the tellers window? If anyone knows anything about this please let me know thank you

Yes you can make debit card withdrawals and credit card withdrawals for that matter over the counter. Not sure if you need your PIN to do this.

If you set up a Thai bank account you will get a debit card.  The card is very useful since you can pay all manner of bills and transfer money using it.

BTW surely your bank will send you a new PIN if you ask them unless the US is different to the UK

thank you so much you've been of great help to me and hopefully when I am in Thailand I can be of service to you. The situation in the United States is this, my bank will not give me ATM pin unless I'm there, they have you put it in a machine in their presence and that is the way they do it as far as I know. For instance they would not send my replacement card directly to Spain for whatever reasons I don't know. What I had to do was to give them my address of my sister in the United States and they mailed it to her and then she mailed it to me. I can only think that these things happen because of what happened after 911. Before I could have the money sent to me by calling someone that I knew at the bank, I can't do that anymore. So the only way that I can access my money in the United States is through a debit or credit card which I have and PayPal. I read up on PayPal and I should be able to attach PayPal and my Thai bank account and that way I can access my account in the States that way. Again thank you so much.

I am no financial genius but one thing I would advise is steering well clear of Pay Pal, they lose money, close accounts and have huge charges.

Best advice if you want to regularly move money to Thailand is,set up a Thai bank account.

The process is easy if you are relaxed about red tape. Some banks might want a work permit but a lot do not. Shop around!

I'm American and its unfortunate your bank will not send replacement cards direct.  My bank always sends my replacement cards to my address in Thailand without problem and pin number remains unchanged from previous card.

Next time your in America go to bank and fill out necessary forms for international transfers because it must be done in person then your set.

When you try to set up Thai bank account if branch refuses then just try another bank.  I think regulations say you must have work permit or some type of long stay visa but many branches will ignore and open account.

Straydog good advice.  To demonstrate your point I am on an O visa retirement extension and my bank (Bangkok Bank)did check my visa type when I set up my account.

That said I have heard of folk on Tourist visas setting up bank accounts :-)
