I only crossed the border once to Laos, but it wasn't as easy as walking across and walking right back. I don't know about Cambodia, but I had to pay about 1,500 THB fee at Laos border. Also, I know there is a limit on the number of times one can cross the border to renew a visa (think it's twice a year) and I believe you only get 15 days back in Thailand when you do a land crossing, not 30 days. You may want to google some Visa agencies, they usually have the rules listed on their websites. Good luck...

I crossed into Laos twice for 30-day extensions (90 day total). However, they told me that I needed to apply for a Visa for the next time.

dear sir,you cant cross in the minute and back to thai border, cambodia border so strict, they always ask, reason you come to cambodia, maybe you can spend 1-2days overthere or go to siam reap and go back to bkk,

No matter if you're going to Laos or Cambodia, you'll have to purchase a visa to get in. The new visa rules basically allow you to do two land crossings if you receive 30, or 15 days depends on your nationality.

A visa to Cambodia, or one to Laos costs around 1,200 to 1,500 baht.

Please have 20,000 baht in cash when you re-enter Thailand. There are countless reports online where foreigners were denied entry to Thailand, who couldn/t show this amount.

Unfortunately, do they not let you go to an ATM to withdraw the money. Savannakhet in Laos, near Mukdahan province, seems to be the best option if you'd like to stay longer.
