Taking dog to Vietnam from Australia

williamjohncoe

Hello,

I am looking into moving to Vietnam for a year or so, and would like to take my dog with me. It seems like getting him to Vietnam should be relatively straightforward, however I'm still looking into how I can return to Australia. I have a couple of questions though, would be great to hear from some one that has done something similar.

Has anyone taken their dog to Vietnam? Anything I should be aware of?

With returning to Australia, I contacted the Dept of Agriculture and they have informed me that it should be possible to return with him provided I go via an approved country. Has anyone done this before, and if so, any advice on which country is good to transit through?

They did say while it is technically possible it is not without risk, so it would be great to hear from anyone that has done this before.

Thanks!

What type of visa will you have?

If you plan to be here on 90 day tourist visas, you'd be well-advised to take your pet with you when you exit and reenter the country every 90 days (mandatory).

Then of course, you'll need to consider the policies for importing your pet into the other country, even if only for the half hour or so required to process back into Vietnam.

I say this is good advice because we always recommend that anyone going on a visa run take their most valuable possessions (laptops, cameras, cash, jewelry, etc) with them, as there are many horror stories of people being refused reentry into Việt Nam based on myriad reasons often only known fully by the people behind the curtain at Immigration.

I can't imagine that you'll have any possession with you more valuable than your pet, so it would be a horrific shame if you became separated from each other by an international boundary with little or no recourse for being reunited.

Yea it's a good point. I was planning in using the 90 day tourist visa and just popping out and back again to get another leaving my dog in Vietnam, but yea that might risky in the case they don't let me back in. Looks like Lao has some fairly doable import rules, so that might be the best option.

That said yea, it's a bit difficult crossing borders with a pet. Might be better off organising for someone to look after him and just get him shipped to me in a nearby country if there are problems. I could arrange everything before the border run.

Hey there. Did you travel with your dog there on a tourist visa in the end?

Dogs are not eligible for a tourist visa...
