US phone service abroad

So I recently moved to Da Nang and was concerned about how I was going to get the SMS verification while in VN. I looked at US Mobile while I was in California and signed up for it to test out. I chose the 10GB plan which is $15 per month but you pay for 12 months in advanced. You also need to select the GSM or Tmobile option since they have 2 options when you sign up. The other option does not work outside of the US. If you need a physical SIM, I think you need to pay for it but they have eSIM if your phone allow eSIM which most phones in the past 7-8 years will. They also have the unlimited data plan but this is only data while you're in the US. Once you go outside of the US or maybe outside the US continental, there's no data, just text and cell works outside the US.

When I got to Da Nang, I got a Mobifone eSIM and tried to text the US and calling the US. It didn't work but that could have been how the salesperson set up their eSIM. It disabled my US Mobile eSIM and nothing went through. When I got to my place, I looked at the eSIM setup and the US Mobile eSIM was disabled so I enabled it. I was able to call the US and they were able to call me. There was 1 glitch in that if they just call the regular number with area code, it went straight to my voicemail. If they add the ‭+1 before the area code, it rings my phone. Text worked fine when I continued using the same threads I was texting before.

If you want to keep your number, you will need to transfer it when you sign up. You can't go back later and say transfer my number into US Mobile. Ask me how I know🤪. If you want to test it out first, there's a 30 day trial so that way you don't have to continue if you don't want to or you can cancel the trial and start the plan and transfer your number in the process. I'm still jet lagged but I'm pretty sure above info is correct. Just want to give the info while it's still fresh in my head.

Don't remember if they ask for a US address or not. It's been almost 6 months since I signed up.

If you have a US phone number, get a google voice account and link that number with your US phone number. Set up a voicemail on your goggle number and messages will be automatically  transacribed and sent to you as an email. If someone calls your US google number and you are on line, it will ring on your computer and you can answer the call. Using your google number on your computer will also permit you to make calls to the US, even to 1-800 numbers.

Google Voice is a Voip and banks and other financial institutions do not send SMS to Voip hence a real phone number.
