Info on teaching ESL

Deane123

My son has moved from Hanoi to Danang, (from New Orleans originally) and is without a laptop currently, so I am searching online to help find info, as he's finding it more difficult to network than it was in Hanoi.

I'm trying to get leads for him about places to apply to teach English as a second language (he has a college degree and is certified to teach ESL).

He's also looking for a reasonably priced place to live. Also, are there any °µÍø½ûÇø places, networks or blogs, etc, to check out for more connections in Danang?

Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
A concerned mom

Just as my mom would have sent me warm wool socks to Afghanistan...... be thankful you aren't in that same predicament....Just send him another God Damn Laptop.... is the way the Corp would handle this situation.... No disrespect intended mam....:)

From what I've been told and read, that would not be a good idea for several reasons. Customs is a nightmare.
He intends to buy one, but right now a job and place to live are more urgent before researching a laptop, which is necessary, as there are so many fraudulent sellers. Thanks!

Tell you son to get off his backside and go use an internet cafe, they are very reasonably priced here. Check out the teaching forums, go knock on some doors where he is.
The time difference for you to get information and relay it to him makes it very difficult for him to be effective in communicating with potential help\job search.
Can;t understand why he's struggling to network in Danang, it's got a great °µÍø½ûÇø scene. If he had good connections in Hanoi, wouldn't it have made more sense to stay there get some funds together buy a laptop etc, before moving? There is always plenty of demand for teachers in Hanoi, so why make it more difficult than it already is.

Don't think you quite understood the question. All your suggestions have been done or considered, thus I am asking these questions.

I do understand the questions, I'm just curious as to why he is struggling. If he's been in Vietnam any length of time (6months or more or evena  few weeks) as a teacher he would know the drill on finding work. Go round the the schools\language centres and knock on the door. Every town has its tourist area and °µÍø½ûÇø area, some cross over a little, but it doesn't take long to find once you ask a few people. You can easily tell the °µÍø½ûÇøs from tourists. check out the teacher forums Dave's ESL etc.

Living quarters, check out craigslist, not great, but it's a start, ask around the areas he is staying, usually someone will know of somewhere and help him out.

How old is he? How did he find work etc. in Hanoi, the process is the same in all cities here unless you arranged a job prioir to arriving. It's not a tough place to find work as a teacher. This time of year maybe a little more so, but it's possible. Accommodation is easily found, I know you are a few thousand miles away and want to help, but if he can't cope on his own two feet while he's here, then you have to question his ability to teach others how to do so.

How old is he?

My point being, is internet cafes are very cheap to use here and he would be better off using this resource as he knows where he is, so can ask about areas to live\avoid etc. If he's not working at the moment he's got plenty of time to do the searching himself. If he finds job leads he can go visit and not wait for the information to be relayed to him.
