Taking out More Than $5000

Bill2014
Leaving Vietnam and after selling all my stuff will have about $6000 . Limit to take out of the country is $5000. Is there any problem if i just declare it at customs? What will they do? Need any bank receipts ? I do not have any evidence of bringing any money into Vietnam.

Normally they don't care if below $10000.
In case, just fill and give the green declaration form.
Change to all $100 bills to get better exchange rate and reduce the load :D

It's a toss-up. I have taken money out several times and I've never been asked, or checked, nor declared anything. I have never said a single word to immigration nor have I been asked any questions by immigration so I don't know how they would even know. If you are going into US you don't have to declare less than 10,000 so no issue on that end. The problem declaring it is you have no proof that you brought it in. I assume you don't have proof that you have paid taxes on it if it was earned in Vietnam. I'm not going to state what I would do in your case as the management here will frown on doing anything that is technically illegal.

Well I got done once when there used to be 2 scanners to go through on exiting Vietnam. Scanner 1 was customs & picked up on the money in an envelope in my back pack & scanner 2 was security but that's a whole different story & long ago.
You could change the extra 1,000usd into a certified gold nugget then you would be covered.

well I am not an expert but just checked ingot gold price in UK & the Gold Bank in London is selling 10 gram ingots at 557 gbp, so 55.7 gbp per gram. My last buy was 18.75 gram ingot at 29,500,000 vnd & by a quick calculation thats cheaper to buy in Vietnam than in UK.

Yes I believe you have a dollar allowance and a gold allowance of 300 grams =~ 10 ounces.
Google about the current limits.
Maybe you can get a 1 ounce Canadian Maple Leaf or Krugerrand coin at a gold shop for around $2000.
Don't pay much over spot price.

As far as i know , Vietnamese gold is lower quality than UK gold. Or can one buy standatd Krugerands , sovereigns etc here?

@Bill2014 FFS check the stamp 999.9 on that ingot. 999.9 is 24 karat be it in Vietnam or where ever................google it

google everywhere but cant find any clear guide. If anyone has done the declaration before please help describe the procedures.

In one article, it mentioned the immigration will require you to produce documentation proof from Bank or SBV that monies belong to you.

Heck ive already withdraw the money and is heading to airport tomorrow. If it just simply filling a declaration, that its OK. But if they need additional doc.. then im screwed.

Joey_Joey

alright quick update. Make sure you get a letter from the bank when you do the withdrawal. The scanner picked up a stack of cash and (luckily) I had that proof with me. They will bring you to a room to count the cash and keep that letter. Thats it for now. cheers..

A few years ago, I carried 7,000 euros with me while leaving Vietnam. During the customs check, the officer noticed it during a scan and directed me to another room. Knowing it was against regulations, I gave 100 euros to each officer (a total of 200 euros), and they allowed me to proceed. Reflecting on this, I believe it's essential to carry the proper legal documentation when traveling with cash exceeding the permitted limits to avoid such situations with immigration.
