An Englishman in Hanoi

Mark Adams

Hello all,

My name's Mark, I recently moved over to Vietnam to teach English with my wife. As I am relatively new to the area, I would be grateful for any advice regarding the city.

To any friendly foreign nationals in the area who may be reading: I would love to find some fluent English-speakers to chat/hang out with.

If there are any people who want to practice their English with me in my free time, you are welcome to talk to me online or in person when I am available. I will not provide free teaching services as I run paid courses for that sort of thing, but you can practice your reading/listening skills with me casually.

Hi wvictor,

Thanks for your reply, have you been in Hanoi long?
I have been wondering about transportation recently. A few of my local friends have been telling me about the hurdles to cross to get going with a scooter in the city.

Do you travel by scooter? If so, do you think it is more practical than relying on taxis?

An °µÍø½ûÇø's view on this would be interesting as my Vietnamese friends all swear by scooter-travel.

Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark
Yes, i been Ha long and it is interesting too.

The answer for use motor bike instead of taxi,
Yes, it is quite convince, but you should be fluent the road map. Some roads are one way in the city.
Few days may be you will mess up with road traffic, but it will be normal after few days when you get used with road and driving culture in here.
Be care full when parking anywhere (even just front of the shop and go inside without care, then you will lost the Motor bike).
Still it is good and reliable than taxi, taxiÂ’s here are always trying to cheating.

I would give you an example was happen to my friend recently;

He take CP (Hanoi Taxi white car with red belt in the body) taxi to go to his office from home. He is always use the CP taxis to pass this way. But that day the driver taken him round a round and come to office which was 120,000 d over charged.
He couldnÂ’t ask any thing and paid the meter reading and ask the receipt. Then he gave the receipt to his local staff and ask to complain for this to CP office.
They check the GPRS reading for the taxi which was complained and they trace back the taxi gone round for cheating.
The CP office was apologized and pay back that extra charged 120,000 d
Lucky he get back all he lost, but most of the time nothing will return.
Wish you be enjoy here safe...

Thanks for the advice and sorry to hear about your friend, I'm glad they managed to sort out their taxi problem.

Once I've settled in a bit more and learned enough Vietnamese to get a licence, I'm sure I'll get used to two-wheeled life.

Dear Mark,

I used to be very fluent at English about 10 years ago when I worked for some foreign companies. But later, I set up my own business and since then, I just deal only with local people and hardly have chance to use my English. Needless to say how bad at English I am now. I really don't know how to start over but just watch Starworld/Starmovies/Hbo daily to catch up with modern English. So I wish to have a coffee with you once a week (if you are available for this) in order to exchange the language in case you are interested in some Vietnamese language (or you can charge the tutor fee).

Please write to me at thuhabui1974@gmail.com. Thanks for reading my message!
