Moving to Saigon, need suggestions please

vietnam2012

My wife and I are considering moving to Vietnam for a few months to a year. We're thinking of Saigon. We work from home, so job is not our motive. Just want to live somewhere nice, affordable and safe. We have a toddler, so a day care / preschool would be nice as well.

We do not want to spend insane amount on rent like we do back home.

Any recommendation would be great.

On side note- - we would like to make new friends there too. If you're up for friendship, please drop in a line.

Look at Craigs List VietNam so gauge the market prices.

Do NOT pick a place until after you arrive as you will need to choose somewhere near facilities like supermarkets, etc.

In Quan 7, and NOT in Phu My Hung - the over-priced enclave of Foreigners with no limits on cost - there are many modern condo's. For instance my office is in a residential condo (it's cheaper) where a two bedroom goes for USD$400 +++ (All utilities, parking, monthly common expenses).

Thanks for the tip Jaitch.
I think we would like to get a house for a change instead of an apartment. Somewhere close to restaurants, bars, etc.

Hi RJ

How long will your family stay in ho chi minh city ?

District 1 with Pham Ngu Lao, Bui Vien, De Tham streets  is the best place for foreigner to stay because it has many suitable things for tourist. But if you live in some months, hotel here will expensive.

do you want to rent a house with which cost ? Can you live another district far away district 1 but lower cost?

Just tell more what u want so when i have free time i will check for you.

Hi again!
We plan to stay there for 6 months at least, 12 if we really love it :)
We are not fussed about staying in the city or anything.
Just somewhere nice, 20 to 40 minutes drive from city is fine too.
A house or townhouse.. with parks, good internet, safe neighborhood, and close to some English Preschools would be nice..

Thanks again!

vietnam2012, if your really not set on where you want to live in Vietnam, may I suggest you check out the city of Can Tho. It's a great place with everything your looking for. without the hustle and Bussel that you have in Saigon.

BEWARE OF THE REAL ESTATE TROLL.

Pham Ngu Lao, Bui Vien, De Tham Streets atre all in the tourist slum of TP HCM, and much of it is so bad it is scheduled for demolition!

Budman1 has it right, of you are not woring or otherwise tied to TP HCM stay in the country, the Mekong can get hot or you can look to the Central Highlands which are, at 4,000-5,000 feet distinctly cooler and the air is fresh. (My home is there).

Living in a stand alone house is extremely expensive in TP HCM, measured in USD$'s monthly. You can get houses more economically in the country.

The normal rental period in 12 months, the real estate trolls get one months rent as commission/finders fees.

Beside Can Tho, I would advise Da Nang as an alternative for Saigon. It is certainly more affordable and safer than Saigon. Check it out.

I'd say it's less suitable for a family with youngster as much as anything else.

You can get some cheap places out in D2 plenty of °µÍø½ûÇøs with young families out that way takes around 20-30 mins to downtown depending on route and time of day. You can also pay silly money too.

I've seen you mention your fondness of this area many times and that its due to be demolished, I'd be interested in reading some evidence of that. While it's not the most delightful of places at times, it can be a fun place to hang out if your savvy enough to avoid the troubles that occasionally occur there.
I have a couple of VN friendsa that owns a couple of bars\hotels in the area and they aren't aware of anything being demolished.

I live in Disctrict 2 in An Phu and we have all the things you are looking for around here. Schools, supermarkets, safe, restaurants and bars, just a 20-30 mins ride from downtown. I've seen apartments renting for around $600, houses are waaaaay more expensive around here(think $3-7 thousand USDollars)

Thanks for all your feedback guys.
I've been to Saigon like 8 years ago and I think we would like to be close to a metro city just so it doesn't too boring for us.

Someone recently suggested - dist.4 , binh thanh district and phu nhuan district

How are they?

We don't want to spent insane money on house. We saw some for $2000, $1500 etc.. We would want to not spend over $1000 a month to start with really..

Hi Vietnam 2012, welcome to Saigon :) Actually there are a lot of places for you to choose. Some other districts like 6,11 and 5 (where I'm living) is also as good as well. Condominiums like Parkson- Hung Vuong in district 5, Flemington- Le Dai Hanh in district 11 or An Phu- Hau Giang in district 6 are good choices. There are Security services and other facilities that may serve your family better. I'm not sure how the current price is but the price is often more reasonable than places in the central city.
Wish your family have a good time in Saigon :)

Hi Vietnam 2012

I have just discussed with my sister yesterday and she agreed to let her house for foreigner to rent.  [please post your ad in the classifieds section]

Watch out for the too eager locals on here trying to get you to rent out their place. go to the snap realestate website and D2 is lovely. Good luck!
