Any RN 's working in Belize from the US????

Gnurse66

Hello Everyone!!
Just wanted to see what is out there for a RN's  as far as work is concerned in Belize. We would like to be in the Placencia/ Seine Bight area in the next 5-7 years and are in the process of byuing land for later to live on. I know that I will not make as much of an income but more important to me is to make a difference in the health of someone I care for. As long as I have enough to live, I am happy, money is not everything, especially since you can not take it with you.
Any input about licensure and emmployment opportunities, life in general is appreciated and mostly welcome!!
Let's get ready for the Journey!
Belize, See you soon!

I know a Nurse and a Doctor that both go back to the states and do short periods of work to sustain themselves here.

I am not sure what the regulations are for RN's to be able to work here.

Hi! What have you found out? My husband is an RN and we are considering Belize....

The wages here are extremely low.   The standards for what is locally termed "nursing" are abysmal.  The main hospital recently had an epidemic of enterobacteria!!!!!!

The process of work permits in Belize is not cast in concrete and the only way to determine is to first come and then try.

Unemployment is a real issue for Belizeans.

I know one woman °µÍø½ûÇø who does midwifery.  She could not live on her earnings.  The physicians here all want all first births to be Cesarean!!!!!!!!!!!!

You may be able to work in US ,for few months in US ,save enough money  and enjoy Belize as a non-working person  ( a tropical vacation).
I believe you may be able to do volunteer work and use your skills to teach.
The income from working as a nurse (if you get a work permit) in Belize may not be much (I am guessing) compared to what you can earn in US,

I am a 3rd semester nursing student finishing my registered nursing degree. I recently visited central and island towns in Belize and decided although many years away, I believe I would like to retire there or potentially move there in 7-10 years and work as a nurse until I retire. I really appreciate any information you will share about nursing careers or even volunteer opportunities.

You might find the following facebook pages useful for info and potential connections and information.

I saw information on this on another forum. I believe it was AllNurses. Apparently the pay and working conditions aren't very good. However doing volunteer work might be beneficial.  I work Neonatal ICU so it might be more difficult for me but I still wouldn't discount volunteering with children. But when I go there it will be comfortable enough to be able to not have to work but be able to still help people.

Carl Hustner Hospital in Belize city is trying to improve the Neonatal care. A neonatal intensivist from US visited this institution last month. If you like to  volunteer in this institution  there is a good chance they may welcome it.

If anyone interested in volunteer work I can help in that area - I volunteer with Belize Red Cross.

Thank you Taco girl, I just may be interested in that when I come down. I do need to find a job that pays but to be able to offer assistance is really rewarding.  :)

Sure thing chele6969, just look me up when you get here.

Taco Girl, do you know anything about the school system there? I am bringing my 7 year old daughter and I am not finding much information.

Thank you again.

If you are coming to the island the best school to look into would be Island Academy
