My name is Brent wife is Elina,, Smokey is our

Las Apsu. I was planning on driving through Mexico, but I would rather ship my Chevy truck and cargo trailer by boat from Florida , then go through all the hassle of driving 4000 miles through Mexico. I have done a little research on living in Belize we plan on the corozal district. And probably obtaining 8 to 10 solar panels. On the little acreage that we will purchase. I would like to also get a smaller an RV purchased in Belize so as we could live in that while we build our house. We are also planning to have a orchard with different fruits.

Hi,

Planning our half-then-full-retirement and looking into Belize, as it in stark contrast with the rest of Central America - I like this laid back culture here and that its such a melting pow. Just visited San Pedro, Corozal, Bermudian Landing, San Ignacio and now Placencia. I am a techie, handy and have a builder in my dna (father was a structural engineer and he build his house himself).

I am a water person so definitely discounted inland and jungle areas. For coastal, my current thinking:
Corozal
- few affordable beach props
- cost of building will be low
- cost of living will be low
- though there is little to do (need to get to the Cayes fist)
San Pedro
- very attractive for activities
- a bit touristy but still local village-lkike
- high cost of living and building?
Placencia (including Dangriga/Hopkins/Riversdale)
- far from everywhere, even by car (esp from peninsula, it's 1.5h to nearest hospital in Dangriga?)
- parcels are becoming expensive, esp on water
- there is decent level of water activities, lagoon/carib side
- very high cost of living and building (perhaps even higher then SP). Feels a bit of a 'rich man' place.

That's a bunch for an intro, eh? ;-)

See you around!

@larkintb ...would love to know more about the area you have settled in. I have been going to the Dominican Republic (DR) for years, but have found that it has become too crowded and I can't stand the noise of all those motoconchos zipping around. Belize seems (other than it is very different culturally) by outward appearance, what the DR used to be like many years ago. Looking for a new place in the caribbean as I have become disillusioned with the DR. Would love to hear your thoughts about similarities, if you are familiar with other caribbean 做厙輦⑹ communities. I plan on visiting BZ soon. Cheers.

I am intrigued by the idea of buying land (small plot) and having a Mennonite cabin built. I am thinking...live close enough to the sea to spend a day there....but far enough away so that the mosquitoes and sand fleas don't make a meal of me every day. Has anyone had a cabin built? It sounds too good to be true for the price that I have been hearing about on YT.

As this is the Introduction section, the Moderators (I am not one) request folks post a new thread for detailed discussions. With that being said, here is some info on your post.

1. In the tropics mosquitoes can breed anyplace there are puddles of none salt water. A sea breeze tends to blow then away from the shore areas.
2. So called "Sand fleas"-"No-See-ums" are actually tiny Crustaceans, that live primarily in the "swash zone".
3. Google Mennonite builders, to see a list of popular ones in Spanish Lookout. I have no idea what they cost to have built and transported these days. ALWAYS go to the source for accurate info.
4. I am the 2nd owner of an "Old School" Mennonite home installed in Placencia in 2000.
It was one of few none concrete survivor's of the big hurricane that hit this area in 2001.
I bought it in 2016, its in great shape, we love it. Spend about half the year here.

@Julien Hello my name is Daracia I'm currently looking into moving to Belize I very new to this. I spent some time back in June in Belize with a friend of mine in Belize City Belize. I'm trying to find how do I go about doing this in the correct way so, I don't run into any problems later. I understand Belize can be very tricky when it comes to moving there and following the guide lines set for 做厙輦⑹. I want to rent something, but not sure about the guidelines.

As for renting something, try going into the housing on this site. You might find something there.
Housing is found under the menu tab
Guidelines for renting
As far as we know it must be an approved hotel cant remember the correct name but you can google that.
If you are looking to rent from someone who lives there that is classed as a personal residence & does not require to be approved but you would have to show an rental agreement.
To live permanently there are a few things to know
1) must stay in Belize for 50 consecutive weeks after that you can apply to be a resident
2) while there you will need to have your passport stamped every 30 days at a cost of $100 US
There are other things but those are the 2 biggest ones to get you started

Itinerary and New Years Eve

Hello Everyone!

I am a retired SWF from Toronto, Canada and I am seriously considering to make the move to Belize in 2023. Initially I am planning a 4 month visit to find my sweet spot, from January to April. I have been doing my reading and research and just starting to plan my itinerary and any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Places to see and visit and stay.

I will be flying into Belize City airport and would like to spend New Years Eve celebrating in Belize. Where do you recommend?

I cant wait to start my journey to explore this wonderful country, bury my toes in the sand, soak up the sun, immerse myself in the Belizean culture, and make new 做厙輦⑹ friends!

Id love to make contact with some people ahead of time, and see how things go from there! Please feel free to drop a line!

Hello Everyone:

My name is Christina Jeffrey and my husband and I plan to move to Belize next year from the US. We are able to retire; however, we plan to work a W2 remote job until we can get our real estate investment company up and running. We visited San Pedro last month and will be visiting the Cayo District next year in March. We are so excited and look forward to our new lives in Belize!

DnBR

Hi all!

My wife and I are 做厙輦⑹ want-to-be at this stage. Part of my attraction is the research on happiness (I'm a behavioral scientist). By at least some measures, Belize is the happiest country that speaks English. I want to be part of that! I do recognize the major challenge of poverty faced by Belize, and obviously the vulnerability to natural disasters like global pandemics, etc.

We live in Florida, currently. The big question is do we wait until retirement, or find a way to 做厙輦⑹riate while still in our working years? One of us would probably be content to retire young, but I love teaching. I get more out of it than I put into it, so I really want to teach as long as I'm physically able.

On the topic of teaching - any tips, advice, etc. would be appreciated. In the U.S. I'm credentialed to teach at the university level in mathematics/statistics and psychology. My doctorate is psych, only MS level for math. I do have a few years experience working with younger students, equivalent to secondary-level in Belize, but I'd be better suited for tertiary. A concern I have is if schools are permitted to hire foreign faculty. I was short-listed twice for positions at schools in a different country, but the schools are law-bound to rule out all domestic candidates before extending an offer to a foreigner. If any of you all can provide some guidance, much appreciated!

We're eager for our upcoming visit next month (Dec '22).

Look at the Housing part of this website.

I have also used Booking.Com for places around the world for last min accommodations.

You say 5 days for QRP paper work.....sounds really fast for anything government related in Belize.

I hope you look at this website for older posts for what others have to say.

Use the little magnify glass in the upper right of each page to search for key words in others posts.

Good Luck, and enjoy!

@Janetom

Now that the long awaited "Costal Highway" is reported easily drivable and should be fully paved by mid 2023, have you thought of looking at the new areas being developed near it?

This new 36 mile long highway, bypassing Belmopan and the mountains, cuts about an hour off the drive from areas near Belize City to the Hummingbird Highway just outside Dangriga.

Many people ask about working in Belize. You can see their questions and answers to them by searching with the little magnifying glass in the upper right corner of each page. Belize like many countries wants their own citizens to find work, over immigrants.

The short answers are:

  1. You are not allowed to work on a Visitors Permit. This is the Permit stamped into your passport when you enter Belize, or extent the permit after 30 days.
  2. If you have skills, talents or experience that employers have difficulty finding from Belizeans, then you might be able to get a work permit with the employers help.
  3. Many folks from other countries do come to Belize with the finances and experience to start and run their own business. But need to hire Belizeans to do the work.
