Large Dog Travel

MrsAmberrae

Hola!

My husband and I are relocating to Costa Rica's central valley in the spring 2021 and are looking for the best way to ship 2 of our dogs.  We have obtained a quote from a pet relocation company for $6k/dog and it's primarily due to their size:. male 165lbs, female 148lbs. We are hoping to spend significantly less than $12k considering all of the other expenses we'll accrue for the move.  If any of you have shipped "oversized" dogs there, please provide additional information regarding the company, costs, services, as well as your overall impression of the company.  I appreciate your time!

Unfortunately, this cost is 'similar' to what others have also reported. Some have resorted to chartering  a plane.

Do not cut costs in this area! Some planes cut all air out of the cabin where the dogs are crated and held.  RESEARCH!  If you are trying to cut costs, cut your human costs not your animals. Charter the plane.

@kristineloto we're scheduling our relo around the seasons to ensure that our dogs won't experience extreme temps or be uncomfortable in this way, so that's not as big of an issue.  I'm not sure if you've done the extent of research that I have, but most airlines won't even ALLOW dogs to fly when the weather gets above a certain temp (at the destination AND origin), so again... not a non-issue, but we're taking precautions as it relates to temp concerns.  It's not about "cutting costs" so much as it is finding out what we should expect in this area and ensuring it's reasonable.

@kohlerias Thank you for your reply!  This is very beneficial info as I want to understand what we should expect in this area to ensure we're not being taken for a ride.
